BONES is now in its ninth season on Fox, Mondays at 8 PM. The series, based on the life and writings of Kathy Reichs, stars Emily Deschanel as forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan and David Boreanaz as FBI agent Seeley Booth. Brennan and Booth now have a daughter and finally married each other, but their teamwork in solving murders remains topnotch.

BONES has been picked up for a tenth season. Series creator Hart Hanson and fellow BONES executive producer Barry Josephson are both at a party thrown by Fox for the Television Critics Association. Hanson’s fellow show runner Stephen Nathan is also here somewhere; Nathan will be taking over the BONES reins while Hanson puts his new series BACKSTROM, starring Rainn Wilson, on its feet.

AX: So you’re still working on Season 9, but you’re now looking ahead to Season 10.

BARRY JOSEPHSON: Yes. Hart and Stephen and [executive producer/director] Ian [Toynton] and everybody who run the show are really excited, so we’re excited about Season 10 and beyond.

AX: Are there any changes that Stephen Nathan is going to make when he takes the helm solo?

JOSEPHSON: No. Stephen has been our co-executive producer with Hart now for years, and no changes, other than Hart is going off to do BACKSTROM, but he will still be in touch with Hart on a regular basis and the show will be run as it has been. And you can talk to the horse’s mouth right there [indicates Hanson].

HART HANSON: It’s so funny – we’ve been running this show together for years and every time I go off to do stuff, Stephen takes over for awhile, so yes, it’ll be the exact same. Our offices will still be right beside each other and we’ll talk every day and all that stuff. I’ll just be running that show, I’ll be running BACKSTROM, and he’ll be running BONES as he has many times before.

AX: So you might come back later on?

HANSON: I’ll be around. I’m not leaving. There’s this thing where you decide who’s going to have the final say. When I’m doing BACKSTROM, Stephen will have the final say on things. I’ll tell him what I think and sometimes I have the final say and he tells me what he thinks, and it won’t change. I won’t be doing passes of the scripts – I won’t be writing on them. He’ll be doing that, but if the audience notices a big change, we did something wrong.

AX: Are you arced out so that you know where Season 10 is going, or is it too early for that?

HANSON: Oh, we arced out through Season 9, with one plan [if it would have been] the end of the series and the other plan to go into Season 10. We’ll put aside our series ender. You never know – we’ll know in a year if BONES really will end in Season 10 or if by some chance it goes to Season 11. I can’t look that far ahead – I can only look seasons ahead, not years.

AX: It looks like there’s a new mystery arc …

HANSON: Yeah. The Ghost Killer arc – we’ll see that arc through, and we have to decide whether or not to see it through past the end of this season or end it on this season.

AX: And what is BACKSTROM?

HANSON: BACKSTROM is based on a series of Swedish novels about a very cranky, racist, misogynist cop who’s not really very good at the cop side of being a cop, but he’s very good at figuring out what people have done wrong, and his group of investigators inPortland, the most politically correct city in the country.

AX: So he’s socially inept, but a great deducer?

HANSON: I think if he wanted to be socially ept, he would be, but he does not care. He’s an angry, angry, bitter man [laughs]. We’ll be in production by the summer.

AX: You introduced Geoff Stults as Walter Sherman on BONES in a backdoor pilot, and then he starred as Walter in one season of THE FINDER for you. Geoff Stults is now starring as an unrelated character on ENLISTED for Fox, but if he has a free moment, might you bring him back onto BONES to wrap up THE FINDER?

HANSON: Oh, my God. We would love to do that. I’m really pulling for his show ENLISTED, I quite like it and I think it gets better and better, but I would love to bring some closure to THE FINDER story, because it needles at me every day. That would be wonderful.
