CD Review: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA VOL. 1 Original Soundtrack

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA soundtrack | ©2011 Intrada Records

No expense was spared in ABC’s answer to STAR WARS, especially when it came to the music budget of its three-hour pilot. And if John Williams made a go of cosmic myth making with the London Symphony Orchestra, then Stu Phillips would get the full disposal of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. “TV” music rarely had this kind of impact, and Phillips’ symphonic power was certainly rousing as it blasted through then-small television speakers, and the vinyl of the re-recorded 40 minutes that Phillips culled from this “Saga of the Star World” for an MCA LP. Now those legions who […]Read On »

Ray Park as Darth Maul in STAR WARS: EPISODE 1 - THE PHANTOM MENACE | ©1999 Lucasfilm Ltd.

Producer Steve Starkey is glowing about his impressive new 3D, CGI animated film MARS NEEDS MOMS which opens tomorrow, so ASSIGNMENT X couldn’t resist asking him his thoughts on George Lucas’ post-conversion 3D of his entire STAR WARS saga. Starkey worked with Lucas in the 1980s as an assistant editor on THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI, and with STAR WARS: EPISODE I – THE PHANTOM MENACE hitting theaters in 3D February 10, 2011, he can’t wait to see what LucasFilm Ltd. comes up with. “I’m excited to see what ILM and Lucas do with a real […]Read On »

Yes, 3D has finally come to a Galaxy far, far away with LucasFilm finally post-converting the first film in his STAR WARS saga into that format. STAR WARS: EPISODE I – THE PHANTOM MENACE has set the date of February 10, 2012 for this huge event, which will once again introduce a whole new generation to the theatrical experience of this venerable franchise. I’m sure fans would have preferred the original trilogy to go first, but so be it. It’s STAR WARS. Seeing it on the big screen, in the original order and in 3D will be worth it (regardless […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: BEING HUMAN takes a bite out of Sam Witwer and Mark Pellegrino

Sam Witwer and Mark Pellegrino in BEING HUMAN - Season 1 | ©2011 Syfy

On BEING HUMAN, a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost share a house and their mutual yet disparate attempts to achieve something like the title condition. The actors playing the series’ two principal vampires, Sam Witwer as roommate Aidan and Mark Pellegrino as police lieutenant (and Aidan’s sire) Bishop, likewise share a few things, like a background in cult hits. Pellegrino was the quasi-saintly Jacob (Pellegrino jokingly refers to him as “diet Jesus”) on LOST, the Earthly incarnation of Lucifer on SUPERNATURAL, Rita’s violent ex-husband on DEXTER; Witwer also appeared on DEXTER, as well as being Davis Bloome, aka Doomsday, […]Read On »

The Dork Side: Movie Quotables for Everyday Life

STAR WARS - original movie poster |©LucasFilm

“It’s a trap!” “I have a strange feeling about this.” “Never tell me the odds.” “Search your feelings, you know it to be true!” “All too easy.” “But I was going into Tosche Station to pick up some power converters!” I think half of the things I say on a daily basis are from a STAR WARS movie. Recently, some cool bloggers in my town wrote about movie quotes that have worked themselves into their everyday lives. I repeat a lot of movie quotes throughout the day. For example, “I am Jack’s complete lack of surprise” from THE FIGHT CLUB. […]Read On »

EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, THE EXORCIST and AIRPLANE! get preserved by Library of Congress

STAR WARS: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK | ©1980 LucasFilm Ltd.

Spanning the period between 1891-1996, the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress designated 25 new films to their film preservation catalog which includes the second STAR WARS film THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, the comedy AIRPLANE! and the horror film classic THE EXORCIST. It was a very eclectic list that also included Spike Lee’s 1992 bio-pic MALCOLM X and the Robert Altman classic McCABE AND MRS. MILLER. Not everything was obvious. Included in the mix were some shorts including the George Lucas directed ELECTRONIC LABYRINTH which was the precursor to his feature film THX-1138 and a two-minute 1913 short […]Read On »
