If the Minions were playable Dungeons & Dragons characters, they’d be Chaotic Neutral. They seem to want to be Lawful Evil – their instinct is to serve the biggest bad guy they can find. However, the Minions’ even more compelling instinct to make each other laugh winds up often canceling out their usefulness to their wicked employers, often resulting in said employers’ demise. Furthermore, the Minions have soft spots that generally have them doing the right thing in the end, even if by accident. Their good cancels out their evil, and vice-versa.
Pierre Coffin has voiced the Minions everywhere they go. He directed the new 3D animated MINIONS & MONSTERS, with Patrick Delage credited as co-director, and wrote the film’s script with Brian Lynch. Coffin also directed the first three DESPICABLE ME films and the 2015 MINIONS, so he’s got as good a grip on these amorphous beings as anyone can.
Introduced in 2010’s DESPICABLE ME, the Minions were the hench-creatures of since-reformed supervillain Gru. They still work for him in the DESPICABLE ME franchise, so the spinoff MINIONS franchise films often center on their earlier escapades.
The Minions look like ambulatory Twinkies with one or two goggle-protected eyes. They are generally a collective force for anarchy, although they are capable of forming plans and having ambitions, as in the case of MINIONS & MONSTERS.
In 1920s Los Angeles, the Minions inadvertently crash a silent movie shoot in pursuit of their next Big Boss. To the surprise and delight of director Max (voiced by Christoph Waltz), the Minions elevate his Western and subsequently become the toast of the town. They even survive the advent of talkies, despite the fact that they speak in gibberish (albeit they now utter a few more decipherable words in English, Spanish and French than they did formerly).
But, as often happens with Minions, they sabotage themselves and break into two groups. The larger contingent believes that Dort (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg), who claims to be an extraterrestrial robot but seems suspiciously like a science-fiction fan in a costume, is their best bet for a new Force of Darkness to aid. (Dort does keep saying he’s here to conquer Earth, after all.)
Meanwhile, Minion creative artist Dave and his Minion best friend Henry, along with their Minion camera operator pal Ed, are determined to make a monster movie. They get hold of something like the Necronomicon and conjure up a little green guy who urges them to call him Goomi (voiced by Trey Parker). Maybe they ought to pay more attention when he gives his full name, which ends in “the Deceiver,” but he’s true to his word when it comes to bringing monsters to Dave’s magnum opus.
The plot strands eventually converge, or collide, resulting in more of the type of slapstick mayhem that propels all Minions-related fare.
By now, most people will have figured out if they like Minions humor or not. For those who do, MINIONS & MONSTERS has gloriously ridiculous sight gags, puns, punchlines and more flying by at a mile a minute. For those who don’t, there is nothing about this that separates it from its brethren. Either way, MINIONS & MONSTERS is the epitome of a Minions movie.
