On July 29th a big party was held by CBS/The CW/Showtime for the Television Critics Annual Summer Press Tour at The Event, which is actually the upper parking lot where the department store Robinson’s/May in Beverly Hills used to be. Taking pictures before heading inside it was quite a turnout of stars from the three networks of their new shows and returning shows of the three networks CBS, The CW and Showtime. I probably missed a few as I went in as soon as the cast from the CW new show THE ORIGINALS, a spin-off from THE VAMPIRE DAIRIES walked […]Read On »

Interview: Mark Strong lets the LOW WINTER SUN set

Mark Strong as Frank Agnew in LOW WINTER SUN - Season 1 | ©2013 AMC/Frank Ockenfels 3

American television frequently remakes series that originated on British television: ALL IN THE FAMILY and THE OFFICE are two of the more successful examples. The crime drama LOW WINTER SUN, set and shot in Detroit, is a remake of the 2006 series of the same name that was set in Edinburgh, Scotland. What makes LOW WINTER SUN unusual is that Mark Strong, who starred in the first version, is recreating his role as Frank Agnew for AMC’s edition, which is airing its first ten-episode season Sunday nights at 10 PM. Frank a police detective who is coerced by a colleague, […]Read On »

Dylan Walsh and Poppy Montgomery in UNFORGETTABLE - Season 2 - "Memory Kings" | ©2013 CBS/Jeff Neumann

Theoretically, the CBS series UNFORGETTABLE is a procedural about Carrie Wells (Poppy Montgomery), who has the gift of eidetic memory, meaning that she has almost total recall of everything she sees and hears. UNFORGETTABLE is not supposed to be about resurrection, but after canceling the show after its initial 2011-2012 run, CBS decided to make a second season after all. UNFORGETTABLE currently airs Sundays at 9 PM. In UNFORGETTABLE, Carrie is a former NYPD detective who is prompted to rejoin the force by her former colleague and lover, Detective Al Burns, played by Dylan Walsh. In the first season, they’re […]Read On »

Movie Review: KICK-ASS 2

KICK ASS 2 movie poster | ©2013 Universal Pictures

Rating: R Stars: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Morris Chestnut, Jim Carrey Writer: Jeff Wadlow, based on the comics by Mark Millar & John S. Romita Jr. Director: Jeff Wadlow Distributor: Universal Release Date: August 16, 2013 Released in 2010 and based on the comics series created by Mark Millar & John S. Romita Jr., the original KICK-ASS was a little uneven and slightly more controversial, what with a pre-pubescent Hit Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) gleefully and gorily slaughtering bad guys. In the main, though, it was fun, surprising, self-aware without being self-sabotaging and generally worth seeing. Now […]Read On »

TV Review: WILFRED – Season 3 – “Distance”

Dwight Yoakam in WILFRED - Season 3 - "Distance" | ©2013 FX/Prashant Gupta

Stars: Elijah Wood, Jason Gann, Dorian Brown, Dwight Yoakam Writer: Jacob Young, series created by Jason Gann & Adam Zwar, adapted for American television by David Zuckerman Director: Randall Einhorn Network: FX, Thursdays @ 10 PM Airdate: August 15, 2013 There aren’t too many shows that can get away with jokes about castration. GAME OF THRONES and TRUE BLOOD show the act, but it’s not meant to be funny. To be fair, the WILFRED episode “Distance” doesn’t actually have emasculation, so levity is a little more possible here. How exactly does Ryan (Elijah Wood) get from obsessing over a crayon […]Read On »

TV Review: WILFRED – Season 3 – “Sincerity”

Jenny Mollen in WILFRED - Season 3 - "Sincerity" | ©2013 FX/Prashant Gupta

Stars: Elijah Wood, Jason Gann, Fiona Gubelmann, Jenny Mollen Writer: Jason Gann, series created by Jason Gann & Adam Zwar, adapted for American television by David Zuckerman Director: Randall Einhorn. Network: FX, Thursdays @ 10 PM Airdate: June 27, 2013 On the face of it, it seems like it could be risky to put the character Wilfred (Jason Gann), a dog that his human friend Ryan (Elijah Wood) and the audience see as a man in a dog suit, in scenes with real canines. The episode “Sincerity” proves otherwise, as having real dogs behaving like themselves just underscores the projection […]Read On »
