CD Review: MAN TO MAN soundtrack

MAN TO MAN soundtrack | ©2011 Movie Score Media

Patrick Doyle’s longtime association with French filmmaker Regis Wargnier on such sometimes exotic, history-based epics as INDOCHINE and EAST-WEST has brought out many of the composer’s most impressively lush works. Traveling to Africa to bring two pygmy tribespeople back to “civilized” Scotland results in a culture clash of symphonic nobility and age-old ethnic percussion for this 2005 score. But more than some soundtrack relic, the soaring MAN TO MAN serves as a hugely impressive warm-up to Doyle’s far-more violent musical conflict between barbaric civilization and those it torments in RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. Doyle’s talent for hearing […]Read On »

CD Review: THE SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA soundtrack

THE SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA soundtrack | ©2011 Buysoundtrax Records

Future KOJAK composer John Cacavas made a notable horror scoring debut aboard 1972’s HORROR EXPRESS, a classic thrill ride that combined mod rock stylings with an orchestral sensibility as old as a fire-eyed Siberian missing link. Cacavas applied an even groovier approach the next year to one of history’s greatest fiends, hearing him in service to an even more evil master as The Count tries to wipe out humanity with the bubonic plague. These SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA would also turn out to be the swan song for Christopher Lee playing the Count at Hammer films, though his nemesis Peter […]Read On »

Perry & Oren Peli Director: Dean White Network: ABC, Tuesdays @ 9 PM Original Broadcast: February 21, 2012 The jungle wants you to behave yourself. This seems to be the message so far of THE RIVER. Last week’s episode, “Los Ciegos,” had two regulars having epiphanies about what jerks they were being. This week’s episode, “A Better Man,” has more of the same with different characters, while […]Read On »

DVD Review: RETREAT

RETREAT movie poster | ©2012 Magnet Films

Rating: R Stars: Cillian Murphy, Thandie Newton, Jamie Bell, Jimmy Yuill Writers: Carl Tibbetts and Janice Hallett Director: Carl Tibbetts Distributor: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Release Date: February 21, 2012 DVD and Digital RETREAT is an entry in the subgenre of an isolated couple being menaced by a stranger. There’s a twist here, with the possibility of a pandemic lurking outside the door. What’s actually happening is something of a surprise,  but the screenplay by Janice Hallett and director Carl Tibbetts doesn’t set up the mystery in a way that keeps us guessing excitedly or fearful for the characters. Married […]Read On »

CD Review: PHASE 7 soundtrack

PHASE 7 soundtrack | ©2011 Howlin' Wolf Records

A pandemic in Argentina causes a quarantined condo to go bananas with expectedly arch, gun-toting anarchy. But if you were only trying to decipher this disease’s effects from listening to PHASE 7‘s score, then you might think it was musical bacteria that caused you to chew bubblegum and kick ass. That’s how spot-on composer Guillermo Guareschi’s south-of-the-border replay of John Carpenter and Alan Howarth’s THEY LIVE is, from a slow, military march to its eccentric blues vibe. Thankfully, the score gets significantly more interesting as civilization really begins to break down, and Guareschi’s well-played homage starts to develop its own […]Read On »

CD Review: STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME: Ultimate Edition soundtrack

STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME soundtrack | ©2011 Intrada Records

Hardcore fans might be loathe to admit that the most popular entry in the STAR TREK film series (at least until J.J. Abrams re-booted it) was the “save the whales” picture STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME that had the least to do with Gene Roddenberry’s mythology – let alone the movies’ majestically adventurous musical character that had been established by Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner. But dismissive purists aside, there’s no denying the one-off pleasures that abound in the lightweight, character-driven VOYAGE HOME especially in director Leonard Nimoy’s decision to bring a seriously avant-garde composer like Leonard Rosenman aboard […]Read On »

TV Review: THE RIVER – Season 1 – “Los Ciegos”

Eloise Mumford and Joe Anderson in THE RIVER - Season 1 - "Los Ciegos" | ©2012 ABC/Mario Perez

Stars: Bruce Greenwood, Joe Anderson, Leslie Hope, Eloise Mumford, Paul Blackthorne, Thomas Kretschmann, Daniel Zacapa, Shaun Parkes, Paulina Gaitan Writer: Glen Morgan, series created by Michael R. Perry & Oren Peli Director: Michael Katleman Network: ABC, Tuesdays @ 9 PM Original Broadcast: February 14, 2012 Too much character development is normally not a complaint for an episode of a TV series – the problem is usually the reverse. “Complaint” and “problem” are perhaps words too strong for what happens in THE RIVER’s third episode “Los Ciegos,” but it starts feeling like a bit of overkill when both of the show’s […]Read On »

TV Review: REVENGE – Season 1 – “Chaos”

Emily VanCamp and Josh Bowman in REVENGE - Season 1 - "Chaos" | ©2012 ABC/Colleen Hayes

Stars: Emily VanCamp, Madeleine Stowe, Henry Czerny, Josh Bowman, Nick Wechsler, Gabriel Mann, Ashley Madekwe, Christa B. Allen, Connor Paolo Writer: Mark Fish & Joe Fazzio Director: Sanford Bookstaver Network: ABC, Wednesday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: February 15, 2012 The episode “Chaos” is perhaps the most aptly titled episode of REVENGE yet – there is so much going on, and it all ties into what we all came here to see, namely the shooting at the beginning of the season, which also starts the episode. And, oh, yes, there is one humdinger of a surprise twist at the end. More cynical minds might suggest we could have seen this coming. I totally […]Read On »
