CD Review: THE ILLUSIONIST soundtrack

THE ILLUSIONIST soundtrack | ©2010 Milan Records

There have been many terrific, epically in-your-face scores for this year’s exceedingly tasty crop of Hollywood CGI toons. So it’s particularly nice to hear the powerful gentility of his beautifully animated French film, one that just received a deserved Oscar bone nod to the quickly vanishing hand-drawn pictures that used to be the category’s, and industry norm. That’s also very much the theme for director-animator-composer Sylvain Chomet’s fable about the waning days of vaudeville, as embodied by a magician who plies his rabbit about Europe in the early 60’s. Where Chomet’s equally wonderful, and far more antic TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE […]Read On »

Yes, Vincent (David Lyons) is at odds with Max (Keith David) here, while a feud between Scales (Vinnie Jones) and Chess (James Frain) creates a surprising […]Read On »

TV Review: CASTLE – SEASON 3 – “Knockdown”

Stana Katic and Nathan Fillion in CASTLE - Season 3 - "Knockdown" |&Copy 2011 ABC/Adam Taylor

“Knockdown” is not your typical episode of CASTLE. The usually light-hearted whodunnit with a hint of will they/won’t they goes to the dark side as Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) gets some more tidbits about her mother’s murder.

Oh, and things are heating up between her and writer/hanger on Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion), but forget cutesy romance, the heat has everything to do with why the wealthy best-selling author is spending so much time going out on homicide cases. Hint – it isn’t merely heat.

The Complete 83rd Annual Academy Awards Nominations

THE KING'S SPEECH movie poster | ©2010 The Weinstein Company

The 83rd Annual Academy Awards announced their nominees early this morning, and there were no huge surprises in most of the categories. The British drama THE KING’S SPEECH rules the nominations with 12, with TRUE GRIT a close second at 10. This “freshness” could actually be a boon to the Joel and Ethan Coen directed western as popularity fades on other nominees. As for the 10 movie, Best Picture category, once again, this is proving to be a very bad mistake. In attempt to be hip and get nominations for more crowd-pleasing films, this thinking has predominantly back-fired with only […]Read On »

Blu-ray Review: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER – SEASON 8 MOTION COMIC

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER - Season 8 motion comic DVD | &Copy 2011 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

Ever since BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER went off the air, there’s been a hole in fans hearts hoping for a resurrection (and the movie reboot without creator Joss Whedon is not it).

However, the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER comic book that has been “executive produced” and periodically written by Whedon himself over the last four years as SEASON 8 and it’s been an absolute joy. It’s brought back the universe we all loved with the correct voice and tone. There’s been death and surprises along the way and it truly is the next best thing to having a Season 8 back on television.
