SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE continues to cut a swath of destruction and add to the body count with the latest episode “A Place in this World”.  Spartacus (Liam McIntyre) post his market showdown gone awry with Claudius Glaber (Craig Parker) has decided to follow the advice and wishes of Crixus (Manu Bennett) and head in search of Crixus’ lost love who has been sold from villa to villa as an offering to gain favor for everyone’s favorite dead master Batiatus (John Hannah). This means that Spartacus and company are officially out of Capua and our story is now split into two different parts.

The Spartacus part is actually the less interesting of the two storylines. What has made these characters so interesting to watch over the course of the first series and then the prequel was to see how they overcame whatever adversity they had before them to become better people, and to also see how what they were overcoming was changing them. At this point Spartacus and Crixus and the rest are sort of one note. They are marching around dispatching Romans on their quest to reunite Crixus and Naevia (not sure who is playing her this season when she re-appears) and really aren’t doing any growing as people. I know this is just the start of the season and the storyline is only continuing what has gone before, but there’s going to have to be some room for these people to change and grow otherwise the series will become stagnant.

On the other hand the Capua story elements are extremely interesting in this episode. Not only is Lucretia (Lucy Lawless) amping up the crazy touched by the gods act, she seems to be faking a lot of her mental illness to position herself into a place where she can get revenge. I’m pretty sure the closest target on her list is Illithyia (Viva Bianca), who closed and bared the doors on the House of Batiatus during the slave rebellion that pretty much wiped out everyone inside. Even though Lucretia seemingly courts madness, I have a feeling it will gradually slip away until she has Illithyia’s child as her own and Illithyia’s throat beneath her knife.

Perhaps the most interesting story of this episode of SPARTACUS is the back story of Doctore (Peter Mensah). Having fallen from grace and following the escaped slaves from the House of Batiatus he has returned to the down and dirty pit fighting of his youth. The scenes with a young Doctore and Titus (Jeffrey Thomas) are the most interesting to me since we’ve never really seen where Doctore comes from. So now several pieces of his past are in place thanks to storylines over the three series, and his story is probably one of the most complete on the show.

Of course, the return of Ashur (Nick Tarabay) should come as a surprise to no one. That snake always has a way to rise to the top of the heap and ally himself with the force that is currently in power. Plus I’m also pretty sure that Tiberius (Pana Hema Taylor) is going to turn out to be his long lost brother. Just at a guess.
