Blu-ray Review: EXPOSED

EXPOSED | © 2016 Lionsgate Home Entertainment

Apparently EXPOSED actually made it to theaters, which after watching it is a bit of a joke to itself. While it may not have made it to the screens in the U.S., it made it to the U.K. where it made $122. You read that right. $122. It could be a lack of promotion, I don’t remember seeing anything about it promoted. Could also be because it sucks on so many levels, no one in their right mind would pay money for it. There are essentially two plotlines going on simultaneously. The first deals with Keanu Reeves character trying to […]Read On »

Movie/VoD Review: HARBINGER DOWN

HARBINGER DOWN | © 2015 Vertical Entertainment

Cast: Lance Henriksen, Camille Balsamo, Matt Winston, Giovonnie Samuels, Winston James Francis, Mick Ignis, Michael Estime Writer: Alec Gillis Director: Alec Gillis Distributor: Vertical Entertainment Release Date: August 7, 2015 HARBINGER DOWN is a pretty blatant rip-off of the John Carpenter classic THE THING. However, the people who made the film – on the back of a successful Kickstarter campaign combined with funds from their own pockets – make clear that’s what they were going for in a homage to not just THE THING but also other science fiction monster movies from the 80s including LEVIATHAN and even a bit […]Read On »

CD Review: ON THE WATERFRONT soundtrack

ON THE WATERFRONT soundtrack | ©2015 Intrada Records

There are composers like Philip Glass (CANDYMAN) who start out in the concert hall, and go onto blaze impressive new careers in Hollywood. Then there are those like Andre Previn (ELMER GANTRY), who prolifically begin in tinsel town, only to leave it completely behind. And then there are such maestros as John Corigliano (ALTERED STATES), who briefly tread in Hollywood while making sure not to quit their day jobs, leaving behind a precious few soundtracks that show the dazzling movie career that could have been. On that note, perhaps no conductor could have been a Hollywood contender like Leonard Bernstein, […]Read On »

Movie/VoD Review: THE WALKING DECEASED

THE WALKING DECEASED | © 2015 Arc Entertainment

Cast: Dave Sheridan, Joey Oglesby, Tim Olgetree, Sophia Taylor Ali, Danielle Garcia, Mason Dakota Galyon, Troy Olgetree Writer: Tim Ogletree Director: Scott Dow Distributor: Arc Entertainment Rating: Not Rated Movie parodies used to be something of a rarity. And then they were not based on current pop culture but on a genre of cinema. AIRPLANE was not based on a slew of shows about airplanes but rather the dramas and action flicks of the time with a unique storyline and comedic slapstick. Parodies remained a rare thing in Hollywood until the SCARY MOVIE franchise emerged and made a ton of […]Read On »

Movie/VoD Review: AVENGED

AVENGED | © 2015 Uncork'd Entertainment

Cast: Amanda Adrienne, Tom Ardavany, Ronnie Gene Blevins, Brionne Davis, Ed Fletcher, Jason Gurvitz Writer: Michael S. Ojeda Director: Michael S. Ojeda Distributor: Uncork’d Entertainment Rating: Not Rated AVENGED is like a supernatural I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE, if that film has a deaf woman that actually dies and begins to rot on her way to killing the men that did her wrong. Oh and if they added a contrived romance plotline that never really takes off during the course of the movie. Zoe (Amanda Adrienne), a deaf girl with a boyfriend that lives far away, decides to go visit […]Read On »

Stars: Phoebe Fox, Helen McCrory, Oaklee Pendergast, Jeremy Irvine, Leanne Best Writer: Jon Croker based on a story by Susan Hill Director: Tom Harper Distributor: Relativity / Hammer Films Original Release Date: January 2, 2015 One of the better haunted house films in the last ten years was 2012’s THE WOMAN IN BLACK – an eerie period film that was produced by the newly rejuvenated British film company Hammer. CD Review: OUR MAN FLINT and IN LIKE FLINT soundtracks

OUR MAN FLINT and IN LIKE FLINT soundtrack | ©2014 Intrada Records

In the ying-yang universe of deserved film score karma, Jerry Goldsmith might have ended up with flying with SUPERGIRL instead of SUPERMAN, or battling a SWARM of killer bees as opposed to climbing THE TOWERING INFERNO. But that never meant that Goldsmith didn’t give his musical all to some truly wacky wannabes, especially when it came to putting on a lady killing outfit for America’s Z.O.W.I.E. agent Derek Flint (as opposed to musically tailoring that certain other British spy). But as 60s-jazz as John Barry might have gotten with Her Majesty’s Secret Service, one couldn’t imagine that composer scaling the […]Read On »

THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING composer Johann Johannsson gets scientific – Interview

THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING soundtrack | ©2014 +180 Records

One could say it’s the cold, volcanic icescape of the earth’s most forbidding land mass that have often infused Johann Johannsson’s music with a beautifully foreboding presence. Like his innovative countrywoman Bjork, Johannsson received art-music acclaim by merging modern classical and alternative music to haunted and mesmerizing effect, creating a series of conceptual albums like “Englaborn” and “Dis” at the same time he began scoring a myriad of shorts, features and documentaries – usually involving brooding, disaffected characters he could apply a psychologically-minded musical style to (even giving ennui to prairie dogs in the process). With his songs playing a […]Read On »

Movie Review: OPEN WINDOWS

OPEN WINDOWS movie poster | ©2014 Cinedigm

Rating: R Stars: Elijah Wood, Sasha Grey, Neil Maskell Writer: Nacho Vigalondo Director: Nacho Vigalondo Distributor: Cinedigm Release Date: November 7, 2014 OPEN WINDOWS declares its intentions right from the start, when we appear to be watching an especially cheesy horror movie starring scream queen Jill Goddard (Sasha Grey). Then it turns out we’re watching a trailer, being watched at a convention, which is in turn being streamed live on the computer of Nick Chambers (Elijah Wood). We can’t say we weren’t stylistically warned that the film is going to play more than a few tricks on its characters and […]Read On »
