DreamWorks Animation held the Los Angeles Premiere of PUSS IN BOOTS on October 23rd at the Regency Theater in Westwood. Closing the street where the theater is located, the “beige” carpet, had backdrops that looked like sets from the film. Costumed PUSS IN BOOTS and Kitty Softpaws walked the carpet, plus before the premiere started Spanish dancers came down the carpet. Fans lined the street to see the stars and guests that attended this early Sunday morning premiere. Seen walking the carpet were the stars of the film, which included: Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton, Amy […]Read On »

CD Review: FUNERAL HOME soundtrack

FUNERAL HOME soundtrack | ©2011 Intrada Records

Though best known for giving a dark, psychological edge to the violent western stylings of Sam Peckinpah’s THE WILD BUNCH, Jerry Fielding’s twisted talent for combining dissonance and melody was equally effective in enclosed spaces, whether said abodes were being besieged by English rednecks (STRAW DOGS), a deviant handyman (THE NIGHTCOMERS) or a crazed computer (DEMON SEED). Fielding’s constant, mesmerizing sense of unease would ironically climax inside the FUNERAL HOME, an independent Canadian horror flick that proved to hold the composer’s last score.  Where a musician with Fielding’s studio resume would’ve turned their nose at being reduced to a PSYCHO-influenced […]Read On »

PUSS IN BOOTS movie poster | ©2011 Dreamworks Animation/Paramount Pictures

Steinberg, Tom Wheeler, Jon Zack, Brian Lynch, based on the story by Charles Perrault Director: Chris Miller Distributor: Paramount/DreamWorks Animation Release Date: October 28, 2011 PUSS IN BOOTS is aimed squarely at everyone who grinned when Antonio Banderas turned up as the voice of the Zorro-like cat in SHREK 2 and stuck around for the sequels. PUSS is actually a prequel to SHREK et al, providing a back story for its furry orange hero. Although the new movie borrows a […]Read On »

Many people absolutely hates the fourth installment of the venerable franchise featuring quirky pirate Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). Yet, I didn’t understand what all the fuss was about. I thoroughly enjoyed ON STRANGER TIDES, which brought the series back […]Read On »

Interview: Madeleine Stowe gets a taste of REVENGE

Madeleine Stowe in REVENGE - Season 1 - "Charade" | ©2011 ABC/Colleen Hayes

In ABC’s new hit series REVENGE, Wednesdays at 10 PM, Emily VanCamp plays Emily Thorne, who returns under an assumed identity to the upscale community in the Hamptons where she lived as a child. Emily’s goal is to get revenge (see the title) on the people who sent her beloved father to jail for life and ruined her younger years. There’s plenty of collateral damage, but Emily’s principal target is Madeleine Stowe’s character Victoria Grayson, who rules the enclave as its unofficially anointed queen. Stowe, a Los Angeles native, had audiences swooning as the heroine in LAST OF THE MOHICANS. […]Read On »

TV Review: CASTLE – Season 4 – “Demons”

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, Susan Sullivan, Molly Quinn, Tamala Jones, Seamus Deaver, Jon Huertas, Penny Johnson Jerald Writer: Rob Hanning Director: Bill Roe Network: ABC, Monday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: October 24, 2011 “Demons” is a marvelously made episode of CASTLE and I absolutely hated it. Okay, the truth comes out, I am a world-class weenie and creepy stuff just plain freaks me. Do. Not. Like. It. However, it’s CASTLE, and even if I don’t like scary stuff, the episode was nonetheless outstanding. When the star of a ghost hunting TV show gets murdered in the house he’s investigating, it looks more […]Read On »

CD Review: THE SPACE CHILDREN / THE COLOSSUS OF NEW YORK soundtrack

THE SPACE CHILDREN / COLOSSUS OF NEW YORK soundtrack | ©2011 Film Score Monthly

Music for a beneficent space brain and a giant killer robot packed with some screwed-up dura mater fill up this impressive double feature of great sci-fi music, composed by the strikingly-named Van Cleave (first name Nathan). While better known (if uncredited) for the underscore of WHITE CHRISTMAS, it’s Van Cleave’s sci-fi scores for the likes of ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS (also put out by Film Score Monthly), CONQUEST OF SPACE and numerous TWILIGHT ZONE episodes that stand as career highlights. But where Van Cleave used CONQUEST and ROBINSON to play the heroism and peril of the outer limits, 1958’s THE […]Read On »
