CD Review: THE SPACE CHILDREN / THE COLOSSUS OF NEW YORK soundtrack

THE SPACE CHILDREN / COLOSSUS OF NEW YORK soundtrack | ©2011 Film Score Monthly

Music for a beneficent space brain and a giant killer robot packed with some screwed-up dura mater fill up this impressive double feature of great sci-fi music, composed by the strikingly-named Van Cleave (first name Nathan). While better known (if uncredited) for the underscore of WHITE CHRISTMAS, it’s Van Cleave’s sci-fi scores for the likes of ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS (also put out by Film Score Monthly), CONQUEST OF SPACE and numerous TWILIGHT ZONE episodes that stand as career highlights. But where Van Cleave used CONQUEST and ROBINSON to play the heroism and peril of the outer limits, 1958’s THE […]Read On »

TV Review: REVENGE – Season 1 – “Guilt”

Emily VanCamp in REVENGE - Season 1 - "Guilt" | ©2011 ABC/Randy Holmes

Stars: Emily VanCamp, Madeleine Stowe, Henry Czerny, Josh Bowman, Nick Wechsler, Gabriel Mann, Ashley Madekwe, Christa B. Allen, Connor Paolo Writer: Nikki Toscano Director: Kenneth Fink Network: ABC, Wednesday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: October 19, 2011 One of the problems I’ve had with REVENGE  is that it does stretch credibility that Emily Thorne (the former Amanda Clarke) seems to think that she is going to ruin the lives of all the people involved in the false accusation and conviction of her father David (James Tupper) without getting caught. But tonight, Emily (Emily Van Camp) does come close and it’s just clever enough that I’m almost willing to forgive that the episode […]Read On »

BBC Worldwide's Julie Gardner | ©2011 BBC

Julie Gardner one of the executive producers on TORCHWOOD, has always been a fan of its parent series DOCTOR WHO. So when she and Russell T Davies brought WHO back in 2005, it was a dream come true. The pair then went on to create the successful spins of THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES and TORCHWOOD. TORCHWOOD MIRACLE DAY has finished airing now, but our exclusive interview with Gardner continues as she tells ASSIGNMENT X a bit about the future of the series, and responds to criticism the series has gotten for portraying homosexual relationships. ASSIGNMENT X: So at San Diego […]Read On »

TV Review: CASTLE – Season 4 – “Eye of the Beholder”

Kristin Lehman and Nathan Fillion in CASTLE - Season 4 - "Eye of the Beholder" | ©2011 ABC/Karen Neal

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, Susan Sullivan, Molly Quinn, Tamala Jones, Seamus Deaver, Jon Huertas, Penny Johnson Jerald Writer: Shalisha Francis Director: John Terlesky Network: ABC, Monday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: October 17, 2011 Looks like we’ve got some thawing on the part of Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) – who is ostensibly not in love with author Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion), who works with her to solve crimes. Like heck, she isn’t, and it comes out when Castle gets tangled up with a really hot insurance investigator who horns her way into their latest case. In this one, a museum director […]Read On »

TV Review: SUPERNATURAL – Season 7 – “Defending Your Life”

Faran Tahir in SUPERNATURAL - Season 7 - "Defending Your Life" | ©2011 The CW/Jack Rowand

Stars: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Jim Beaver, Faran Tahir, Alona Tal, Julian D. Christopher, Emilie Ullerup Writers: Adam Glass, series created by Eric Kripke Director: Robert Singer Network: The CW Original Telecast: October 14, 2011 One of the pleasures of SUPERNATURAL is the show’s flippant entities, as opposed to the I’m-gonna-get-you variety. True, the cheerful off-hand types aren’t always on hand, but when they are – think Mark Sheppard’s Crowley, Richard Speight’s Trickster/Loki/Gabriel and Sebastian Roche’s Balthazar, to name a few – they’re a hoot. We can add to the list Faran Tahir’s Osiris, Egyptian god of judgment, who turns […]Read On »

Sam started out as the sensitive, “let’s hear them out” one and Dean was the […]Read On »

TV Review: REVENGE – Season 1 – “Duplicity”

Ashton Holmes and Josh Bowman in REVENGE - Season 1 - "Duplicity" | ©2011 ABC/Colleen Hayes

Allen, Connor Paolo Writer: Wendy Calhoun Director: Matt Shakman Network: ABC, Wednesday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: October 12, 2011 Ah, the sweet havoc goes on as Emily Thorne (formerly Amanda Clarke) goes on her revenge-ridden spree to ruin the lives of everyone who was involved in the false accusation of her father David (James Tupper) during one summer in The Hamptons. Hence the plot of the new ABC series REVENGE. TV Review: CASTLE – Season 4 – “Kick the Ballistics”

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, Susan Sullivan, Molly Quinn, Tamala Jones, Seamus Deaver, Jon Huertas, Penny Johnson Jerold Writer: Moira Kirland Director: Rob Bowman Network: ABC, Monday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: October 10, 2011 With “Kick the Ballistics”, CASTLE is really on. And it was on in this episode with a hey-nonny. When the body of a young woman, killed execution style, is found on a construction site, it seems more than a little odd that a college kid making extra bucks by tutoring should find herself the target of a mob hit. But the real shocker is when the ballistics come back […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: Stephen Lang lands on TERRA NOVA

Stephen Lang in TERRA NOVA - Season 1 | ©2011 Fox/Michael Lavine

The characters in TERRA NOVA, which airs on Fox Mondays at 8 PM, have it rough. They’ve left behind the crowded, airless, polluted world of 2049 for the environs of Earth, circa 80 million years BC. There is fresh air and plentiful food, but there are also people-eating dinosaurs, power struggles and a supremely tough military man in charge, Commander Nathaniel Taylor, played by Stephen Lang. Lang (should anyone need reminding) also played badass baddie Col. Miles Quaritch in AVATAR, the most successful motion picture ever made. He was also the villain in this year’s remake of CONAN THE BARBARIAN, a […]Read On »
