Book Review: WHEDONISTAS! A CELEBRATION OF THE WORLDS OF JOSS WHEDON AND THE WOMEN WHO LOVE THEM

WHEDONISTAS! A CELEBRATION OF THE WORLDS OF JOSS WHEDON AND THE WOMEN WHO LOVE THEM

Editors: Lynne M. Thomas & Deborah Stanish Price: $14.95 Publisher: Mad Norwegian Press trade paperback (available in trade paperback and Kindle) It’s rare, though not as rare as it was, for a writer/director/producer to generate a fandom all his/her own. It’s inarguable that Joss Whedon resides at the pinnacle of this group. Should the title of WHEDONISTAS! A CELEBRATION OF THE WORLDS OF JOSS WHEDON AND THE WOMEN WHO LOVE THEM need explanation, it refers to female fans of the man and his released work so far: the television series BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, ANGEL, FIREFLY and DOLLHOUSE, the FIREFLY […]Read On »

TV Review: REVENGE – Season 1 – “Treachery”

Margarita Levieva and Emily VanCamp in REVENGE - Season 1 - "Treachery" | ©2011 ABC/Randy Holmes

Stars: Emily VanCamp, Madeleine Stowe, Henry Czerny, Josh Bowman, Nick Wechsler, Gabriel Mann, Ashley Madekwe, Christa B. Allen, Connor Paolo Writer: Ryan Scott Director: Bobby Roth Network: ABC, Wednesday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: November 16, 2011 The “Treachery” episode of REVENGE makes you wonder if the writers haven’t written themselves into a corner, because it certainly looks like the wheels are coming off Emily’s big plot. The problem is, the show started at the end of the summer season with someone getting shot – and it sure looked like Emily was getting what she wanted and planned. So you have to figure the writers know where they’re going with the story and how […]Read On »

CD Review: 1941 soundtrack (limited 3,500 edition)

1941 soundtrack | ©2011 La La Land Records

It almost never fails that a filmmaker who thinks he’s King of the World will produce at least one box office disaster (if not two) in an otherwise hugely profitable, and sometimes critically distinguished career. Sometimes, said films are of the “movie I really want to make” variety, the kind of “little” picture that the studio gives the director a mulligan on so they’ll do the blockbuster sequel they really wanted in the first place. But even when that personal movie is packed with enough spectacle and explosive hubris to make it anything but an art film, there can still […]Read On »

CD Review: THE BLACK HOLE soundtrack

THE BLACK HOLE soundtrack | ©2011 Intrada Records

Where Disney turned to Jules Verne for their trailblazing sci-fi magnum opus in 1953 with 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, THE BLACK HOLE sought to tap into the renewed space craze brought on by George Lucas’ STAR WARS. But instead of battling starships, the big difference here was that laser blasts, rolling meteors and robotic mayhem would mostly occur within the awe-striking confines of one mighty spaceship named the U.S.S. Cygnus. Piloting it far less sympathetically than Captain Nemo (if not without a unhinged commanding presence) is Dr. Hans Reinhardt (played with always-eccentric élan by Maximillian Schell), who gives no […]Read On »

CD Review: THE THREE MUSKETEERS soundtrack

THE THREE MUSKETEERS soundtrack | ©2011 Milan Records

Whether you’re a composer doing a new take on pirates from the Caribbean or England’s most famous detective, it seems impossible now to play it straight for movies determined to hip up the look, and sound of historically iconic characters. Hence, a plethora of soundtracks that apply the incongruities of electric guitar-topped orchestras and satirical ethnic stylings to accompany multiplex costume spectaculars. So make no mistake that Paul Haslinger’s latest iteration of Alexandre Dumas’ swashbucklers is going to give you the gloriously traditional symphonic strains that Herbert Stothart applied to the 1948 version of THE THREE MUSKETEERS, let alone the […]Read On »

TV Review: SOUTH PARK – Season 15 – “A History Channel Thanksgiving”

Mr. Garrison and someone claiming to have Indian blood on SOUTH PARK - Season 15 - "A History Channel Thanksgiving" | ©2011 Comedy Central

Writer: Trey Parker Director: Trey Parker Network: Comedy Central, airs Wednesday nights Original Telecast: November 9, 2011 It’s that time of the season where SOUTH PARK drops the politics and current events and just gives in and gets silly. This year it’s with the hilarious episode “A History Channel Thanksgiving.” When the boys have to write a report on Thanksgiving, they decide to get their info from the History Channel instead of hitting the books. Of course, the History Channel Thanksgiving special alludes to the fact that aliens were there during the original Indian/pilgrim gathering at Plymouth Rock. Absurdity progresses […]Read On »

TV Review: CASTLE – Season 4 – “Heartbreak Hotel”

Nathan Fillion in CASTLE - Season 4 - "Heartbreak Hotel" | ©2011 ABC/Eric McCandless

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, Susan Sullivan, Molly Quinn, Tamala Jones, Seamus Deaver, Jon Huertas, Penny Johnson Jerald Writer: Elizabeth Davis Director: Bill Roe Network: ABC, Monday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: November 7, 2011 Aside from the flashback which begins “Heartbreak Hotel,” this is one of those episodes that go back to the fun and witty CASTLE that we all know and love. Not happy about the flashback – flashback storytelling is just a lame way to build excitement at the beginning of a show when it does not need it. Nor did this one even come close to playing trough. Blech. […]Read On »

TV Review: REVENGE – Season 1 – “Charade”

Margarita Levieva in REVENGE - Season 1 - "Charade" | ©2011 ABC/Colleen Hayes

Stars: Emily VanCamp, Madeleine Stowe, Henry Czerny, Josh Bowman, Nick Wechsler, Gabriel Mann, Ashley Madekwe, Christa B. Allen, Connor Paolo Writer: Mark B. Perry and Joe Fazzio Director: Sanford Bookstaver Network: ABC, Wednesday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: November 2, 2011 As I noted elsewhere recently, one of the problems with these endlessly mysterious kinds of shows like REVENGE, where for every question that gets answered, three more pop up, is that it can be a little hard to tell if the writers are just being mysterious or if they simply screwed up. And it’s really hard in the re-telling of this show not to sound cynical because it is so very, […]Read On »
