Every season has one, a shocking elimination. DANCING WITH THE STARS: Season 14’s shocker may be the much-too-soon elimination of Sherri Shepherd and her partner Val Chmerkovskiy. She will be missed; her charisma matched only by Carson Kressley’s two seasons earlier. But that wasn’t the only surprise of the night. Roshon Fegan & Chelsie Hightower, who came in second, were in the bottom two! If that doesn’t scare everyone, I don’t know what will. It’s every man and woman for themselves this season with a cast so naturally talented, scores like 24 can actually send you home.
Starting the show off with some exuberant fervor was KISS performing a heart-stopping rendition of “Lick It Up.” Then, we were alerted to an injury Melissa Gilbert sustained during her routine last night. Apparently she suffered a slight concussion while performing with her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy. She was a no show for the results but, needn’t matter, she and Chmerkovskiy were first safe from elimination. Next safe was the man who carried the injured Gilbert down the stairs to be checked, Gavin DeGraw along with Karina Smirnoff. And then, for some reason the encore was back! It was no shocker when head judge Len Goodman called out to Donald Driver & Peta Murgatroyd to do, their highest marked dance, the Paso again.
Thirdly, Maria Menounos & Derek Hough were safe and then Jaleel White & Kym Johnson, who, with the crowd yelling so loud couldn’t hear that yes they were safe. Surprisingly, Gladys Knight & Tristan MacManus avoided being in the bottom two despite having the lowest scores of the night. An intriguing video segment on how the pros are handling the extra pressure this season with a cast of celebs that are more able and more willing to give it all they’ve got entertained us. That was followed by a touching Tango with Karina Smirnoff & partner tangoing while the Gotan Project played behind them.
Of course I would be remiss if I didn’t mention ABCs self promotional moment with host Tom Bergeron hailing James Van Der Beek from the audition to promote his new show DON’T TRUST THE B—- IN APT. 23. The leaders Driver & Murgatroyd were next safe while Fegan & Hightower were soon told they were, in fact, in the bottom two.
In a brilliant PR opportunity, we got to see a sneak peak of the new DWTS Las Vegas show, starring some of the favorite contestants from the past and some popular pros too. Quickly back to business, Katherine Jenkins & Mark Ballas, who also couldn’t hear whether or not they were safe or in jeopardy, were quickly reassured they would dance again. Sexy William Levy & Cheryl Burke were last to be saved. It was down to the bottom two Fegan & Hightower and Shepherd & Chmerkovskiy. Before even being told she was voted off the show, Shepard was already in tears. It was so obvious how much she enjoyed being on the show and how badly she wished to stay. But, unfortunately that is how the show biz cookie crumbles…on to next week! Stay tuned!
