Michael Apted is a multi-award-winning director associated largely with feature films both narrative (COAL MINER’S DAUGHTER, GORILLAS IN THE MIST, THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH) and documentary (including the UP series of features, which revisits the same group of people every seven years, starting with 7 UP and currently at 56 UP). When executive producer Sarah Timberman first optioned Thomas Maier’s nonfiction book MASTERS OF SEX, a biography of sex research pioneers William Masters and Virginia Johnson, she knew the material had potential. Timberman partnered with writer/fellow executive producer Michelle Ashford, who developed the work as a television series, which premiered on Showtime last season, starring Michael Sheen as Masters and Lizzy Caplan as  Johnson.
