The Drake Building where much of 666 PARK AVENUE takes place looks like a luxury New York address, but don’t be fooled. Ghosts show up and kill people, some residents come back from the dead, while others get eaten by the walls. The building’s owners, Gavin (Terry O’Quinn) and Olivia (Vanessa Williams) Durant, seem to have more power than even wealth and political influence can convey. And yet innocent, in-love Jane Van Veen, played by Rachael Taylor, and Henry Martin, played by Dave Annable, accept the offer to become the building’s new managers. Dave quickly starts to be taken in […]Read On »

Movie Review: DREDD 3D

DREDD 3D movie poster | ©2012 Lionsgate

Rating: R Stars: Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, Wood Harris Writer: Alex Garland, based on the JUDGE DREDD comic created by John Wagner and Carlos Esquerra Director: Pete Travis Distributor: Lionsgate Release Date: September 21, 2012 Apart from shared comic book origins, DREDD 3D has nothing to do with the 1995 Sylvester Stallone starrer JUDGE DREDD (or the 1997 and 2003 iterations). This is a good thing, as the new version has a sense of internal coherence that helps us take it seriously on its own terms. Director Pete Travis makes good use of 3D and slow motion to […]Read On »

Comic-Con News: Karl Urban says DREDD reboot is completely different from the 1995 film JUDGE DREDD

DREDD movie poster | ©2012 Lionsgate

While the 1995 comic book adaptation of JUDGE DREDD starring Sylvester Stallone didn’t really work, the new reboot DREDD hopes to follow closer to the original comics created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. However, Karl Urban who plays the new Dredd, says he wasn’t really worried about being compared to the original – even though he did re-watch it before he suited up. “[The original] was never a topic of conversation – it was just not relevant because it was so tonally different,” says Urban. “I did rewatch it prior to doing DREDD, but it was more to see […]Read On »

Movie Review: PRIEST

PRIEST movie poster | ©2011 Screen Gems

Rating: PG-13 Stars: Paul Bettany, Karl Urban, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q, Lily Collins, Christopher Plummer, Stephen Moyer Writer: Cory Goodman, based on the graphic novel series by Min-Woo Hyung Director: Scott Stewart Distributor: Screen Gems Release Date: May 13, 2011 PRIEST is a decent enough post-apocalyptic action movie, pitting a kinetic superhero against an army of darkness, but the film’s reliance on archetypes is at odds with what seem to be its intended philosophical underpinnings. By the end, we can’t tell if director Scott Stewart and screenwriter Cory Goodman have intentionally managed to avoid being overly pretentious in adapting Min-Woo […]Read On »

Movie Review: RED

RED movie poster | © 2010 Summit Entertainment

What happens to old CIA (and MI-6, and KGB) agents once they’re put out to pasture? Well, according to RED (the film’s acronym for the status of Retired, Extremely Dangerous), they can lead absolutely mundane lives. Unless of course somebody tries to kill them, in which case, they return to form in no time flat.
