If you thought being a ballerina in the cutthroat world of dance was enough to drive a young woman mad, just try making it as an actress in the psychopathic town of Hollywood. It’s a place that’s hell itself for the uncountable hopefuls it’s chewed up and out, no more so than for those who’ve debased themselves to climb its ladder. But when that leg up is given by the devil’s minions, selling one’s soul to Hollywood takes on a whole new horrific meaning for one particular hopeful named Sarah, who endures a terrifying series of auditions, and then far […]Read On »

TV Review: DOCTOR WHO – Series 8 – “Time Heist”

Peter Capaldi as The Doctor in DOCTOR WHO - Series 8 | ©2014 BBC/BBC Worldwide/Adrian Rogers

Stars: Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman Writer: Steven Moffat & Steve Thompson Director: Douglas Mckinnon    Original Telecast: September 20, 2014 Network: BBC America I’ll admit that I was surprised to see the negative press rolling out of the UK about this latest episode of DOCTOR WHO, before it aired over here. “Time Heist” isn’t the strongest episode of this new series, but it was enjoyable and I’m really not sure where all of the anger is coming from. Basically the setup involves The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Clara (Jenna Coleman) trying to break into the most heavily secured bank in the known […]Read On »

TV Review: DOCTOR WHO – Series 8 – “Listen”

Stars: Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman, Samuel Anderson Writer: Steven Moffat Director: Douglas Mckinnon   Original Telecast: September 13, 2014 Network: BBC America Steven Moffat is a master of the DOCTOR WHO scare episode. He has a unique ability to create new foes for The Doctor that make your hackles go up, and make you want to hide behind the couch the same way you did when you were a kid watching the classic WHO serial “The Brain of Morbius.” First he gave us the Weeping Angels in “Blink”. Then we had to contend with the Vashta Nerada in “Silence in […]Read On »

Stars: John Vernon, Samantha Eggar, Linda ThorsonWriter: Robert Guza, Jr. Writer: Robert Guza, Jr. Director: Jonathan Stryker (pseudonym of Richard Ciupka) Suggested Retail Price: $24.95 Distributor: Synapse Films Jensen Farley was a film distributor in the early 1980s that specialized in exploitation films including a handful of forgotten sex comedies (JOYSTICKS), a children’s film (THE LAST UNICORN) and two cult horror films THE BOOGENS and CURTAINS. CURTAINS is the most curious of the two because it’s lay dormant for years, never seeing a decent DVD or Blu-ray release. It also had a troubled production history, taking several years to make […]Read On »

Comic-Con 2014: Hand’s on ALIEN: ISOLATION video game – SDCC

One of the most anticipated games of 2014 is the survival horror game ALIEN: ISOLATION, a game that promises to bring back the fear and claustrophobia of the original movie. During Comic-Con 2014, I was given a three-minute demo of the game inside a ginormous alien egg, where I was able to test out – for only three minutes – the game and get a feel for the dark, brooding environment. First off, the whole process of stepping into an ALIEN egg is just plain weird but cool at the same time. But it definitely sets the stage for […]Read On »

DVD Review: BLACK WATER VAMPIRE

BLACK WATER VAMPIRE | © 2014 Image Entertainment

Cast: Danielle Lozeau, Andrea Monier, Anthony Fanelli, Robin Steffen, Bill Oberst Jr. Writer: Evan Tramel Director: Evan Tramel Distributor: Image Entertainment The first two-thirds of BLACK WATER VAMPIRE are a near re-creation of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, except with a vampire, snow and better camera equipment. Yep, it is another found footage horror flick where a group of four young documentarians investigate four murders of women on the same day over the course of four decades in the Black Water Forest in Washington State. Of course, none of these doomed documentaries ever ends well. As the Black Water killings go, […]Read On »

CD Review: DAY OF THE DEAD (Limited Edition) soundtrack

DAY OF THE DEAD soundtrack | ©2013 La La Land Records

Even when outright horror movies had humor in them, composers would mostly play the often gory action straight. While DAY OF THE DEAD might amiably shamble amongst George Romero’s original trilogy, it’s John Harrison’s score that stands as the most unique of their soundtracks for this reason. Where NIGHT used library music for maximum black and white effect, and Goblin brought catchy, progressive rock color to DAWN‘s entrail-laden shopping mall, it could be argued that Harrison was the composer who truly got Romero’s subversive satire, even if this sequel was claustrophobically set in a decidedly non-consumerist military mine complex. For […]Read On »
