Can you believe it’s been twenty years since Walt Disney Pictures released the live action movie THE ROCKETEER, based on the comic books by Dave Stevens? Well, now D23 (the only official fan club for Disney) and Creature Features are presenting a very special event at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on June 21st. This event commemorates the release of THE ROCKETEER, and the film will be playing in the exact same venue that it opened two decades ago. The print of film has been newly restored and digitized and the screening will be preceded by a star studded […]Read On »

Stars: Skyler Samuels, Amy Peitz, Grey Damon, Grace Phipps, Benjamin Stone, Alyssa Diaz, Ki Hong Lee Writer: Dan Berendsen based on the novels by Liz Braswell Director: Wendey Stanzler Network: ABC Family, airs Tuesday nights Original Telecast: June 14, 2011 After sort of suffering through the premiere episode of THE NINE LIVES OF CHLOE KING, I’m still a bit confused as to what exactly to think. So many shows have aspired to be the new generation’s BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, and so many of them have failed. MTV’s recent TEEN WOLF comes close to the wit and charm of the […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: Mark Ryan on THE WILDWOOD TAROT cards and book

THE WILDWOOD TAROT book

Mark Ryan does all sorts of things. On stage, he was in the original London production of EVITA, first as Magaldi, then as Che and more recently, he toured with Eric Idle in ERIC IDLE EXPLOITS MONTY PYTHON. On television, he starred as the Merry Man Nasir in three seasons of HTV’s ROBIN OF SHERWOOD (the first two seasons are now out on Blu-ray from Acorn). On film, he’s been the voice of Bumblebee and Jetfire in the TRANSFORMERS movies. As a comic book writer, he created THE PILGRIM with Mike Grell. As a songwriter, he’s working on a musical […]Read On »

TV Review: THE VOICE – Season 1 – “Live Show, Quarter-Finals 2”

Network: NBC, airs Tuesday nights Original Telecast: June 14, 2011 I have so many mixed feelings about THE VOICE, that I’m still unsure whether I like how they’re trying to shake up the traditional AMERICAN IDOL formula or if they’re doing a disservice to the singers for not letting the show play out a little longer so audiences can get used to the contestants more. Either way, “Live Show, Quarter-Finals 2” is here and we not only saw four singers go home (two from Team Blake Shelton, two from Team Christina Aguilera), but Team Adam Levine and Team Cee Lo […]Read On »

TV Review: AMERICA’S GOT TALENT – Season 6 – “Seattle Auditions 2”

Piers Morgan, Nick Cannon, Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel in AMERICA'S GOT TALENT - Season 6 | ©2011 NBC/Trae Patton

AMERICA’S GOT TALENT’s second time around in Seattle almost turned into a complete bust. Act after act disappointed not only the judges and the live audience but likely those watching at home as well. No one seemed worthy of a trip to Vegas, certainly not the “self proclaimed” world record holder of blowing up water bottles – his act was a complete bust. Buffo the priest didn’t hold up much better with his illusionist act, nor did “Kimo presents Madonna” – don’t ask. Don’t these people have friends to tell them not to go on TV and make fools of […]Read On »

TV Review: TEEN WOLF – Season 1 – “Pack Mentality”

Crystal Bryant in TEEN WOLF - Season 1 | ©2011 MTV

Stars: Tyler Posey, Crystal Reed, Dylan O’Brien, Tyler Hoechlin, Holland Roden, Colton Haynes, Linden Ashby, JR Bourne Writer: Jeff Flaming Director: Russell Mulcahy Network: MTV, Mondays @ 10 PM Airdate: June 13, 2011 The TEEN WOLF episode “Pack Mentality” has a good enough plot for us to forgive some of its shortcomings. The tension and romance is good, the makeup effects are less so, and there is a werewolf-on-werewolf fight that indicates a serious lack of imagination, albeit broadcast standards may have created some issues. The episode kicks off with Scott (Tyler Posey) having a terrifyingly vivid dream in which […]Read On »

20th Century Fox held the Los Angeles Premiere of MR. POPPER’S PENGUINS on June 12th, at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. Along with a “white” carpet with MR. POPPER’S PENGUINS written on it, there was loads of cotton to make it look like snow drifts and snow blowing (actually it was soap suds) as the stars walked down the carpet at the start of the premiere. They had built a pen by the doors of the theatre to house the Penguins, who actually walked the whole length of the carpet. This live-action comedy stars Jim Carrey, who chilly relationship […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: DO NOT DISTURB actor-director Eric Balfour

DO NOT DISTURB, currently available on VOD, is the epitome of accessible independent filmmaking, both in production technique and in content. The film is an five-segment anthology set in a hotel room, with a connective through-line starring Diva Zappa as a maid. Each segment has a different director. Mali Elfman created the premise and serves as producer. She and some of the other filmmakers appear in the movie at various points. Perhaps the most prominent acting appearance by one of the filmmakers of DO NOT DISTURB is that of Eric Balfour. L.A. native Balfour, been a professional actor for most […]Read On »

Composer Interview: Henry Jackman marks the spot for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

Composer Henry Jackman | ©2011 Henry Jackman

As cool as it is to have your music pumping the extra kick-ass mile into the hugely enjoyable antics of non-powered, wannabe superheroes, there’s nothing quite like getting your musical mutant on by graduating to the big leagues of X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, a score that marks a huge evolution for composer Henry Jackman. Starting his career as an innovator in England’s electronica world, Jackman’s equally impressive string arrangements for album producer Trevor Horn drew the attention of Hans Zimmer, a composer with the Magneto-like powers of irresistibly pulling in promising talent to his lair at Remote Control. It wasn’t long […]Read On »
