CD review: LORD OF ILLUSIONS (1,200 edition) soundtrack

LORD OF ILLUSIONS soundtrack | ©2011 Perseverance Records

Having done standout, and distinctly offbeat synth-centric work for such twisted auteurs as Dario Argento (PHENOMENA), Alejandro Jodorowsky (SANTA SANGRE) and Richard Stanley (DUST DEVIL), Simon Boswell would ironically compose one of his most symphonically straightforward horror scores for Clive Barker’s unnerving, oddball take on Chris Angel, as ruled over by a Manson Family-esque demigod. With the English composer given a new Hollywood presence at the time of LORD’s 1995 release (a year that almost marked his noteworthy, if more rhythmically fun studio score to HACKERS), Boswell showed he could certainly bend the traditional orchestral tableau to his warped desired, […]Read On »

CD Review: DREAM HOUSE soundtrack

DREAM HOUSE soundtrack | ©2011 Varese Sarabande Records

It’s been a while since John Debney got to score a body count thriller after the savage likes of I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, END OF DAYS and THE RELIC, as well as the more beatific spirit of the underrated DRAGONFLY. Now as he enters a DREAM HOUSE that holds the spirits of a murdered family, Debney’s ghost leads with both the heart and raised hair follicles. It’s a nicely measured approach whose musical flooring ranges from the spiritual to the foreboding. Sorrowful violins, girls’ voices, and plaintive themes all make for a nicely melodic visitation, with even […]Read On »

DVD Review: CHUCK – THE COMPLETE SEASON 4

CHUCK - THE COMPLETE SEASON 4 | ©2011 Warner Home Video

Stars: Zachary Levi, Yvonne Strahovski, Adam Baldwin, Joshua Gomez, Vic Sahay, Scott Krinsky, Sarah Lancaster, Ryan McPartlin, Mark Christopher Lawrence, Bonita Friedericy Distributor: Warner Home Video Suggested Retail Price: $59.98 It’s hard to hate CHUCK, even when it sometimes veers wildly off course. Yet, when all is said and done, CHUCK – THE COMPLETE FOURTH SEASON still provided some pretty great episodes during a massive (and occasionally uneven) 24-episode season. Season 4 gets off to a rocky start with Chuck (Zachary Levi) and Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) constantly having relationship woes as they deal with their forthcoming wedding. This is where […]Read On »

Movie Review: IN TIME

IN TIME movie poster | ©2011 20th Century Fox

Rating: PG-13 Stars: Amanda Seyfried, Justin Timberlake, Cillian Murphy, Vincent Kartheiser, Alex Pettyfer, Olivia Wilde, Matt Bomer, Johnny Galecki Writer: Andrew Niccol Director: Andrew Niccol Distributor: 20th Century Fox Release Date: October 28, 2011 On the upside, IN TIME has a great premise and its, well, timing couldn’t be better, what with its heartfelt sentiments that the super-rich are draining life from the poor hitting the screen right as Occupy Wall Street is in the streets. On the downside, director/writer/producer Andrew Niccol is so intent on his message that he sidesteps a lot of the potential inherent in his science […]Read On »

Steinberg, Tom Wheeler, Jon Zack, Brian Lynch, based on the story by Charles Perrault Director: Chris Miller Distributor: Paramount/DreamWorks Animation Release Date: October 28, 2011 PUSS IN BOOTS is aimed squarely at everyone who grinned when Antonio Banderas turned up as the voice of the Zorro-like cat in SHREK 2 and stuck around for the sequels. PUSS is actually a prequel to SHREK et al, providing a back story for its furry orange hero. Although the new movie borrows a […]Read On »

Movie Review: THE DOUBLE

THE DOUBLE movie poster | ©2011 Image Entertainment

Stars: Richard Gere, Topher Grace, Odette Yustman, Stephen Moyer, Stana Katic, Martin Sheen Writers: Michael Brandt & Derek Haas Director: Michael Brandt Distributor: Image Entertainment Release Date: October 28, 2011 THE DOUBLE is a thriller set in Washington, D.C. that involves both the CIA and the FBI, yet is virtually apolitical. Writers Michael Brandt & Derek Haas make a concession to present-day filmmaking expectations and pack […]Read On »

TV Review: GOOD VIBES – Season 1 premiere – “Pilot”

Mondo and Lonnie in GOOD VIBES - Season 1 | ©2011 MTV

Network: MTV, airs Thursday nights Original Telecast: October 27, 2011 With so many animated series vying for audience attention on network and cable television, GOOD VIBES feels like it’s come a little too late to the party. It’s MTV’s companion piece of the return of BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD and it’s a nice fit – it has  similar scatological humor, but it also doesn’t break any new ground either. The premiere episode introduces us to the overweight Mondo (voice of Josh Gad). He’s just moved to the Sunny California beach town of Playa Del Toro with his hot mom Babs (Debi […]Read On »
