There have been many movies that have lost out on nabbing that Best Picture Oscar, but 1981’s REDS was probably the most glaring snub. Even though it was nominated for 12 awards and writer-director-producer and actor Warren Beatty won Best Director, the film ultimately lost out to CHARIOTS OF FIRE. Now, 30 years later, it’s clear that REDS was the more deserving movie which transformed the life of Socialist activist, writer and journalist John Reed into a sprawling three and a half hour saga. To honor its anniversary, the 2011 TCM Film Festival had a special screening Saturday night, and […]Read On »

While speaking at the 2011 TCM Classic Film Festival screening of his 1981 epic film REDS with moderator Alec Baldwin, writer-director-producer-actor Warren Beatty spoke about wanting to make more movies, but admitted he was a sluggish decision maker. “There’s a point where this little thing called life [happens],” says Beatty. “I have an 11-year-old, a 14-year-old, a 16-year-old and now a just turned 19-year-old. With each one of them, I feel that I have four small Middle Eastern countries I  have to negotiate with. Each one of them is more interesting than five movies. But I’m going to make another […]Read On »

Morgan Spurlock in POM WONDERFUL presents THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER SOLD | ©2011 Sony Classics

With POM WONDERFUL PRESENTS THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER SOLD, documentarian Morgan Spurlock tackles advertising in movies head-on in this very funny look in how movies and television shows sell out every day (including Spurlock himself). In Part 2 of our exclusive interview, he discusses advertising, independent films and the state of documentary films. ASSIGNMENT X: Do you think advertising is evil? MORGAN SPURLOCK: I don’t think advertising is inherently evil, but I hate the way that it’s used, and how it’s questionably put into certain places like schools. That absolutely should not happen.  I think there are places where you […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: Morgan Spurlock shills THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER SOLD – Part One

POM Wonderful presents THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER SOLD movie poster | ©2011 Sony Classics

I think it was around the time that James Bond boarded a Brazilian tram car with a 7-Up placard before sending a villain smashing through a British Airways billboard that I noticed (even at the tender age 15 years) that this movie was trying to sell me something. That isn’t to say how much more obvious those thoughts were when Elliot introduced E.T. to earth commercialism by handing him Reese’s Pieces, or how a Dr. Pepper machine just happened to be in the control room where Raymond Burr was facing off against GODZILLA ‘85. Those days of on-camera advertising now […]Read On »

Interview: THE CONSPIRATOR composer Mark Isham is the true Lincoln Lawyer

Composer Mark Isham

If there’s a filmmaker concerned with the American conscience, then it would be Robert Redford. Like another pop movie star-turned-director, many of Redford’s deliberately paced, and deeply dramatic films seek out the bonds of family, love of country, and the adherence to its supposed values- whether it be in the Montana fly fishing of A RIVER RUNS THOUGH IT, the subversion of the nation’s favorite QUIZ SHOW, and the tragedy of our Middle Eastern involvement that switches LIONS FOR LAMBS. These are the four pictures among Redford’s eight films (including THE MILAGRO BEANFIELD WAR, THE HORSE WHISPERER, THE LEGEND OF […]Read On »
