Exclusive: ACTOR ALEX O’LOUGHLIN RIDES THE WAVES OF ‘HAWAII FIVE-0’

HAWAII FIVE-0 has been very good to CBS. For twelve years (1968-1980), actor Jack Lord played Steve McGarrett, the head of an elite team of the state’s special investigations. So it’s fitting that in resurrecting the franchise (an unsuccessful revival was attempted in 1997), the network would turn to an actor they’ve been very good to – Alex O’Loughlin. The Australian actor had previously starred for CBS in the short-lived 2007 series MOONLIGHT where he played a blood-sucker and in last year’s medical drama THREE RIVERS where he played a transplant surgeon. Movie Review: THE KING’S SPEECH

A stressed-out man with a lifelong stammer goes to a speech therapist for help with public speaking. If this doesn’t sound like especially fertile ground for gripping drama, let’s add that the year at the start is 1934, the stammerer in question is the British Prince Albert (Colin Firth) and that his therapist is commoner Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush), an Australian immigrant and family man with a passion for acting that is, alas, more enthusiastic than artistic.

Movie Review: TANGLED

For those jonesing for an animated Disney fairytale in the traditional style, or just a fun film that can be shared with the kids, TANGLED fills the bill. Quick, to the point and entirely enjoyable, TANGLED takes the traditional Grimm story, gives it some action and the title princess some gumption and takes off in beautiful style, looking much like the old enchanted films of yore, with 3D that brings up a couple of moving moments and is otherwise unobtrusive.

There’s a telling movie to be made about the pharmaceutical drug trade in the U.S. (and elsewhere), but LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS isn’t it. This wouldn’t be a problem if LOVE wasn’t aspiring to be that movie, while simultaneously putting romance front and center.

Zachary Levi may play a nerdy super spy on TV’s CHUCK, but this Wednesday he’s moonlighting as the roguish animated character Flynn Rider in Disney’s Rapunzel retelling TANGLED (which opens nationwide on Wednesday). It’s the kind of double duty the actor relishes – especially since both parts are so different. In TANGLED, Levi plays thief who befriends the long-haired Rapunzel and the two go on an epic adventure together. THE NEXT THREE DAYS is an English-language remake, apparently quite faithful, of the French thriller POUR ELLE. In the new version, scripted and directed by Paul Haggis (CRASH), Russell Crowe plays a husband so devoted that, when it looks like his wife is going to spend the rest of her life in prison, he decides to break her out and flee the country, even though he has no previous criminal expertise whatsoever. In Showtime’s new dramedy THE BIG C (which just wrapped up its first season this week), erstwhile suburban housewife Cathy Jamison, played by Laura Linney, turns her life upside-down when she is given a diagnosis of terminal cancer. She doesn’t immediately tell her husband Paul, who is bewildered by Cathy’s sudden (to him) change in behavior. Movie Review: MADE IN DAGENHAM

With all of the arguments today about labor unions, MADE IN DAGENHAM is certainly timely. The film, directed by Nigel Close and written by William Ivory, concerns the real strike that occurred in 1968 at the Ford auto factory in Dagenham, England, when a one-day walkout by the plant’s 187 female workers over their designation as “unskilled” workers (and the commensurate lower wages, vs. the 50,000 skilled males then employed there) turned into a full-on strike for equal pay for equal work. HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PT. 1 gets off to a bit of a wobbly start, as even those who are familiar with J.K. It seems everybody has taken a turn at depicting Arthur Conan Doyle’s proto-detective Sherlock Holmes.
