NBC’s CHUCK, now in its fifth season in its new timeslot on Fridays at 8 PM, is the brainchild of creators/executive producers Chris Fedak and Josh Schwartz. The title character, played by Zachary Levi, started out as a nerdy employee at the Buy More who was transformed into an inexperienced super spy when his brain became filled with the Intersect, a wealth of espionage knowledge that also (at the end of Season Two) included fighting skills. Over the years, Chuck fell in love with and finally married his spy handler Sarah, played by Yvonne Strahovski, and befriended grumpy fellow spy […]Read On »

Movie Review: ANONYMOUS

ANONYMOUS movie poster | ©2011 Sony Pictures

Rating: PG-13 Stars: Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave, Joely Richardson, David Thewlis, Xavier Samuel, Sebastian Armesto, Rafe Spall, Edward Hogg, Jamie Campbell Bower, Derek Jacobi Writer: John Orloff Director: Roland Emmerich Distributor: Columbia Pictures Release Date: October 28, 2011 What is the problem some historians have with the notion that William Shakespeare wrote the plays that are attributed to him? An argument is made in the film ANONYMOUS that Shakespeare’s father was illiterate, but it seems logical that the mind capable of writing Shakespeare’s plays and poems was capable of learning to read in the first place. In any event, most […]Read On »

Daniel Gillies in THE VAMPIRE DIARIES - Season 2 - "Rose" | ©2011 The CW/Quantrell Colbert

The vampires on THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, now in its third season Thursdays at 8 PM on the CW, have a lot to write about in their journals, particularly when it comes to their family relationships. From the start, we’ve had the complicated sibling relationship between Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder), both in love with the mortal Elena (Nina Dobrev). Last season, we met Daniel Gillies as Elijah, one of the Original vampires, whose brother Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is a half-vampire/half-werewolf hybrid. This might not be so bad if Klaus hadn’t killed the rest of the family and now keeps […]Read On »

In THE DOUBLE, Richard Gere plays former CIA agent Paul Shepherdson, who is dragged back into the field when it looks like the presumed-dead Russian agent he was chasing has resurfaced to kill again. Topher Grace plays Ben Geary, an FBI agent who partners with Paul. Among the people they talk to is Stephen Moyer’s Brutus, an imprisoned KGB assassin who reveres the man the other two are seeking. Moyer, who speaks with his native English accent when not playing characters who hail from elsewhere, speaks with great affection about his best-known character, TRUE BLOOD’s gentlemanly Louisiana vampire Bill Compton. Rating: PG-13 Stars: Amanda Seyfried, Justin Timberlake, Cillian Murphy, Vincent Kartheiser, Alex Pettyfer, Olivia Wilde, Matt Bomer, Johnny Galecki Writer: Andrew Niccol Director: Andrew Niccol Distributor: 20th Century Fox Release Date: October 28, 2011 On the upside, IN TIME has a great premise and its, well, timing couldn’t be better, what with its heartfelt sentiments that the super-rich are draining life from the poor hitting the screen right as Occupy Wall Street is in the streets. On the downside, director/writer/producer Andrew Niccol is so intent on his message that he sidesteps a lot of the potential inherent in his science […]Read On »

Steinberg, Tom Wheeler, Jon Zack, Brian Lynch, based on the story by Charles Perrault Director: Chris Miller Distributor: Paramount/DreamWorks Animation Release Date: October 28, 2011 PUSS IN BOOTS is aimed squarely at everyone who grinned when Antonio Banderas turned up as the voice of the Zorro-like cat in SHREK 2 and stuck around for the sequels. PUSS is actually a prequel to SHREK et al, providing a back story for its furry orange hero. Although the new movie borrows a […]Read On »

Stars: Richard Gere, Topher Grace, Odette Yustman, Stephen Moyer, Stana Katic, Martin Sheen Writers: Michael Brandt & Derek Haas Director: Michael Brandt Distributor: Image Entertainment Release Date: October 28, 2011 THE DOUBLE is a thriller set in Washington, D.C. that involves both the CIA and the FBI, yet is virtually apolitical. Writers Michael Brandt & Derek Haas make a concession to present-day filmmaking expectations and pack […]Read On »

Emily’s goal is to get revenge (see the title) on the people who sent her beloved father to jail for life and ruined her younger years.
