Exclusive Interview: Director Eugene Jarecki on THE HOUSE I LIVE IN

THE HOUSE I LIVE IN | ©2013 PBS

THE HOUSE I LIVE IN, filmmaker Eugene Jarecki’s documentary about the “war on drugs” in the United States, won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. The film posits that criminalizing drugs does nothing to stop the drug trade and indeed may be making it worse; it is inarguably filling up prisons beyond capacity. THE HOUSE I LIVE IN was released theatrically in 2012; PBS is airing it Monday night, April 8 (check local listings for time) as part of the network’s INDEPENDENT LENS series. Jarecki is committed to showing THE HOUSE I LIVE IN […]Read On »

LUCKY BASTARD movie poster | ©2013 Vineyard Haven Pictures

Rating: NC-17 Stars: Don McManus, Jay Paulson, Betsy Rue, Chris Wylde, Catherine Annette, Lee Kholafai, Lanny Joon Writers: Robert Nathan & Lukas Kendall Director: Robert Nathan Distributor: Vineyard Haven Pictures Release Date: April 5, 2013 “Found footage” is a popular horror subgenre these days. LUCKY BASTARD applies it to a thriller that is not supernatural and not exactly horror, though it’s right on the border, using the format deftly to draw us into the action right across the room. It’s unnerving and unsettling, because we like most of the readily credible characters and also because of the structure. We’ve seen […]Read On »

On FX’s JUSTIFIED, which has its fourth-season finale Tuesday at 10 PM, Timothy Olyphant’s Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens gets to do most of the flashy stuff – shooting people, romancing women, trying to outsmart his old frenemy and current Harlan County crime boss Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins). However, the tone of the show wouldn’t be the same without Raylan’s world-weary, incredibly sensible boss Art Mullen, played by Nick Searcy. Searcy’s IMDB page lists 95 film and TV acting credits, including some big projects like MONEYBALL and THE FUGITIVE, plus PARADISE FALLS, the 1997 feature Searcy wrote and directed. On TNT’s MONDAY MORNINGS, TNT Monday nights at 10 PM, the show centers around a hospital’s weekly Morbidity and Mortality meetings. Bill Irwin’s character Dr. Buck Tierney is often the focus of these meetings, as so many of his patients die that his colleagues have nicknamed him “007,” suggesting a license to kill. Irwin, a native of Santa Monica, California, would seem to have a license to do theatre. He’s a graduate of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Clown College (yes, this is a real institution).
