The World Premiere of Marvel’s ANT-MAN was held recently in Hollywood at The Dolby Theatre. It was a big premiere closing down Hollywood Boulevard from Highland to Orange. Seen walking the carpet were the stars of the film, which included: Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly (very pregnant), Corey Stoll, Judy Greer, Michael Pena, David Dastmalchian, Wood Harris, Abby Ryder Fortson, Gregg Turkington, Martin Donovan, Adam McKay (Screenwriter), Christophe Beck (Composer), and […]Read On »

ANT-MAN: Composer CHRISTOPHE BECK gets big with new Marvel movie

Ant-Man-CD-cover

Few Marvel superheroes might have an inferiority complex like Ant-Man. He’s a guy decked out in blue and red, wearing what appears to be some diver’s helmet, gifted with the ability to shrink down to insect size while still delivering a man-sized punch. Not exactly as cool as a mythic hammer, a repulsor ray equipped iron suit or an ability to turn into a big green rage engine. Plus, there’s that name, one subject to any number of self-effacing quips by Paul Rudd, an oft-comedic actor. You know THE DARK KNIGHT which is great indeed when it comes to giving […]Read On »

Interview: EDGE OF TOMORROW composer Christophe Beck stays alive with his first sci-fi score

EDGE OF TOMORROW | ©2014 Warner Bros.

In the two or so decades since Christophe Beck followed Howard Shore and Mychael Danna as one of Hollywood’s most valuable Canadian composing imports, the burly, bearded and bespectacled musician has become an exemplar on how to incorporate a pop-rock sensibility into an old school, and often orchestral talent for melody. It’s a hummable talent that’s made him a go-to guy for teen hijinks (THE PERFECT MAN, A CINDERELLA STORY), rhythmically swooning romance (GUINEVERE, UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN), talking animals (GARFIELD, THE MUPPETS) and thoroughly R-rated bad boy behavior (THE HANGOVER, HOT TUB TIME MACHINE) – all before really hitting […]Read On »

CD Review: MUPPETS MOST WANTED / THE MUPPETS soundtrack

MUPPETS MOST WANTED / THE MUPPETS soundtrack | ©2014 Intrada Records

Animation has been a particularly well-suited realm for Christophe Beck to practice his melodically energetic way of giving an orchestra the frisky, bright vibes of pop music, a Pharrell-ish feeling of optimism as well as playfully ominous danger that’s recently helped to propel The Mouse House’s short PAPERMAN to an Oscar win before assisting in FROZEN‘s feature-length CGI-toon gold – a movie that’s made Beckthe box office champ of cartoon scoring as well. And if Beck can give animation the sensation of infectous happiness, than why not felt? Such is the antically pleasant spin he’s given to two Muppet movies, […]Read On »

CD Review: MUPPETS MOST WANTED soundtrack

MUPPETS MOST WANTED soundtrack | ©2014 Walt Disney Records

The best kid’s stuff has always has a wisenheimer appeal to adults, bringing on cuteness that the tykes can enjoy, while working on a completely different satirical level that their parents get a chuckle out of. Such is the lovable balance of sweetness and sarcasm that’s made the Muppets endure through innumerable sequels, a hip factor that goes off the scale when you’ve got Flight of the Conchords’ Bret McKenzie re-invigorating a bunch of puppets. MUPPETS MOST WANTED is a singular, happy celebration of self-effacing sarcasm, with songs that are perhaps even more toe-tappingly hilarious and catchy than McKenzie’s first […]Read On »

CD Review: FROZEN soundtrack

FROZEN soundtrack | ©2013 Walt Disney Records

An iced cornucopia of The Magic Kingdom’s greatest fairy tale hits that reprises the Hans Christian Anderson LITTLE MERMAID magic, FROZEN brims over with cute sidekicks, a dashing hero and the upped ante of two princesses – one with a power that Professor Xavier would admire. It all makes for exactly the kind of pre-teen soundtrack catnip that set the studio’s animated standard for a reason, and is once again delivered at the height of hiply imaginative panache. FROZEN‘s memorable numbers have been co-written by the WONDER PETS duo of Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (who also happen to have […]Read On »

CD Review: The Best Scores of 2013 – The Runners-Up

Brian Tyler / NOW YOU SEE ME soundtrack | ©2013 Glassnote

BEYOND TWO SOULS (Lorne Balfe / Sony Entertainment) Though it’s far more of an interactive movie than it is a video game, the negligible level of first-person shooter ability here doesn’t prevent BEYOND TWO SOULS from being a complete immersive experience, especially with the eerie, and rapturous quality of Lorne Balfe’s score, leveled up with the ace technical and musical production oversight of Hans Zimmer. For a heroine seemingly cursed by her lifelong bond to an invisible entity, Balfe conjures a truly beautiful theme, topped with a female voice that resonates with a wounded emotion that binds this powerfully symphonic […]Read On »

CD Review: TOWER HEIST soundtrack

TOWER HEIST soundtrack | ©2011 Varese Sarabande R

Brett Ratner might not have the best tastes in p.c.-friendly sound bytes, but he certainly can make fun movies like three RUSH HOUR pictures, let alone have the geek love to get a legit movie jazz master like Lalo Schifrin to score those Chan / Tucker buddy cop pairings. For whatever reason, Schifrin’s not among the crew of TOWER HEIST picture that stands at the height of Ratner’s multiplex-pleasing skills. But if you can’t get the old pro, then a relatively Young Turk like Christophe Beck will do nicely. Beyond being the king of Hollywood’s party down, rock-funk sound with […]Read On »
