CD Review: DOCTOR WHO: SERIES 6 soundtrack

DOCTOR WHO: SERIES 6 soundtrack | ©2012 Silva Screen Records

The Doctors might change every season or other, but we can be thankful that Murray Gold has been riding the Time Lord’s T.A.R.D.I.S. since his first, revamped regeneration. In the process, the new “Who”’s music has constantly impressed with its sheer, giddy sense of invention and production value, qualities that quickly impressed even a non-acolyte like myself. DOCTOR WHO: SERIES 6 is no exception, especially with the dynamic playing of BBC’s Nation Orchestral of Wales under the enthusiastic baton of Ben Foster. If there’s any quality that makes this two-CD collection’s numerous suites sound of a piece, then it’s the […]Read On »

CD Review: EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC

EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC soundtrack | ©2011 Nathan Furst

Ennio Morricone has gotten some real humdingers to score in his more-than-prolific career, particularly when it comes to such crazy genre pictures as ORCA, HOLOCAUST 2000 and TREASURE OF THE FOUR CROWNS. Yet while these movies might be inadvertently hilarious, Morricone has always played the most ungodly material with a straight face, no more so than with EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC. One of this sequel’s many hilarious mistakes was turning its evil spirit into an African locust demon named Pazazu. Yet it’s this same tribal spirit that makes Ennio Morricone’s score for an otherwise woeful film so intriguing. With high-pitched […]Read On »

Composer Interview: Jeff Grace haunts THE INNKEEPERS

THE INNKEEPERS soundtrack | ©2012 Movie Score Media

Any horror-centric composer can enter a haunted house and awake the resident spooks by throwing a battery of percussion instruments and equally unsubtle samples down the steps of a dark basement. But it’s one thing to rattle the nerves, and another to truly frighten the listener. With subtlety, and melody becoming many since-deceased composers like Bernard Herrmann and Jerry Goldsmith, a young musical Turk named Jeff Grace is successively scaring the hell out of us with more of a whisper than a scream, even if he might not have his predecessor’s orchestral resources. It’s a similar high-quality, low budget appeal […]Read On »

TV Review: AWAKE – Season 1 – “The Little Guy”

Dylan Minnette in AWAKE - Season 1 - "The Little Guy" | ©2012 NBC/Neil Jacobs

Stars: Jason Issacs, Laura Allen, Dylan Minnette, Cherry Jones, Steve Harris, Wilmer Valderrama, BD Wong Writer: Kyle Killen Director: David Slade Network: NBC, airs Thursday night Original Telecast: March 8, 2012 After establishing the very complex work of AWAKE where cop Michael Britten (Jason Isaacs) finds himself living in two different realities – one where a car accident claimed his wife and one where the crash claimed his son, this second episode “The Little Guy” settles into a really nice groove. The concept could still be challenging for normal viewers, but this episode makes the conceit go down real smooth, […]Read On »

TV Review: SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE – “Chosen Path”

Steven Dunlevy in SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE - "Chosen Path" | ©2012 Starz

Stars: Lucy Lawless, Liam McIntyre, Manu Bennett, Peter Mensah, Viva Bianca, Craig Parker Writer: Misha Green, Created by Steven S. DeKnight Director: Michael Hurst Network: STARZ, airs Friday nights Original Telecast: February 24, 2012 “Chosen Path” is an interesting new episode of SPARTACUS VENGEANCE. There’s a lot going on in the wake of the destruction of the gladiatorial arena of Capua, and while some of it is good, a lot seems pretty bad for those involved. Of course the subheading of this episode could be one of my favorite lines from CARNIVALE, “there ain’t no secret to dancing the cooch.” […]Read On »

Movie Review: SILENT HOUSE

SILENT HOUSE poster | ©2012 Open Road

Rating: R Stars: Elizabeth Olsen, Adam Trese, Eric Sheffer Stevens, Julia Taylor Ross Writer: Laura Lau, based on the Gustavo Hernandez film LA CASA MUDA Directors: Chris Kentis & Laura Lau Distributor: Open Road Films Release Date: March 9, 2012 SILENT HOUSE is advertised as being made in one continuous 85-minute take. If true, this is a wonderful feat of economic filmmaking, but it has strangely little bearing on the movie’s overall effect. Because the action moves from inside the title structure to outside and back again, the immediacy that the single moving take should provide dissipates somewhat. Directors Chris […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: GAME CHANGE writer Danny Strong on Sarah Palin, politics and more

On the set of GAME CHANGE with screenwriter Danny Strong | ©2012 HBO

GAME CHANGE is an apt title for what happened in the 2008 election when John McCain, the Republican nominee for President of the United States of America, selected then-Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin as his running mate. Even people who see eye to eye on nothing else can agree that what followed was not quite like anything else that had ever happened on the national stage. The book GAME CHANGE by Time Magazine editor-in-chief Mark Halperin and political journalist John Heilemann encompasses the entire 2008 election, including the Democratic contest between then-Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. The HBO film […]Read On »
