CD Review: DAY OF THE DEAD (Limited Edition) soundtrack

DAY OF THE DEAD soundtrack | ©2013 La La Land Records

Even when outright horror movies had humor in them, composers would mostly play the often gory action straight. While DAY OF THE DEAD might amiably shamble amongst George Romero’s original trilogy, it’s John Harrison’s score that stands as the most unique of their soundtracks for this reason. Where NIGHT used library music for maximum black and white effect, and Goblin brought catchy, progressive rock color to DAWN‘s entrail-laden shopping mall, it could be argued that Harrison was the composer who truly got Romero’s subversive satire, even if this sequel was claustrophobically set in a decidedly non-consumerist military mine complex. Exclusive Interview: ATLANTIS actress Jemima Rooper channels Medusa

Jemima Rooper is Medusa in ATLANTIS | ©2013 BBC America

In ATLANTIS, now airing its first season on BBC American Saturdays at 9 PM, we’re in the days of the Greek myths. Jason (Jack Donnelly), who will eventually steal the Golden Fleece and marry Medea, is currently having adventures with mathematician Pythagoras (Robert Emms) and a tirelessly self-promoting, slightly out-of-shape Hercules (Mark Addy). We know the group’s female member by name, but aren’t used to seeing the character Medusa not as a snake-haired Gorgon, but rather with the lovely face of actress Jemima Rooper. London native Rooper has split her work between theatre (including the recorded-for-National Theatre Live production of […]Read On »

Movie Review: OUT OF THE FURNACE

OUT OF THE FURNACE movie poster | ©2013 Relativity Media

Rating: R Stars: Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Zoe Saldana, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe, Tom Bower, Sam Shepard Writers: Brad Ingelsby and Scott Cooper Director: Scott Cooper Distributor: Relativity Media Release Date: December 6, 2013 OUT OF THE FURNACE is a film that seeks to pull deep meaning out of what feels like the closed-ended plot of an episode of a cable series, like JUSTIFIED or BOARDWALK EMPIRE. It is meant to be a heartfelt tale of loss and revenge, but despite some fine performances, the characters are underwritten. There’s only so much emotion we can feel when symbolism […]Read On »

The interiors on the soundstages of Hollywood Red Studios for TNT’s MOB CITY, Wednesdays in two-hour blocks, are as elaborate as any feature film sets. For Frank Darabont’s tale of the Forties-era clash between Los Angeles mobsters and police, production designers Alex Hajdu and Gregory Melton have made sure that everything from the upscale clubs for the well-heeled to the scabby apartments of the desperate all have an accurate Forties look. The costumes designed by Giovanna Ottobre-Melton are similarly true to life. Robert Knepper, who plays Mob enforcer Syd Rothman, enthuses about Ottobre-Melton’s work, “The costumes are great. There are jokes aplenty, the odd magazine and of course the message/clip that the Angel Gabriel left for the Winchesters in “Hammer of the Gods.” In “Rock and a Hard Place,” Dean (Jensen Ackles) himself gets in on the action, and though the […]Read On »

Neal McDonough and Jon Bernthal in MOB CITY - Season 1 - "Red Light" | ©2013 TNT/Doug Hyun

In MOB CITY, airing in three two-hour blocks on TNT on successive Wednesdays beginning tonightat 9 PM, some of the characters are fictional, like Jon Bernthal’s protagonist, LAPD Detective Joe Teague. However, some of the characters on both sides of the law in the Forties L.A./mobster noir drama, created by Frank Darabont based on John Buntin’s book, are taken from history. Ben “Bugsy” Siegel (Ed Burns) and Mickey Cohen (Jeremy Luke) made their mark in the annals of organized crime, while soon-to-be-LAPD Chief William Parker would someday have Parker Center named for him. Neal McDonough portrays Parker as the man’s […]Read On »
