Music Review: Over the Rhine – THE LONG SURRENDER

Over the Rhine - LONG SURRENDER | ©2011 Great Speckled Dog

Things have certainly mellowed for the husband wife duo of Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist who write and perform as Over the Rhine. When they started off in the early ‘90s, they provided a perfect blend of alternative angst with Bergquist’s raspy vocals echoing a much smoother sounding Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde. While the band had its followers, they never did fully receive the credit they deserved, but have continued to produce solid efforts over the last 20 years. With THE LONG SURRENDER, the group finds themselves in a much more somber groove with  this smoky set of 13 […]Read On »

TV Review: V – Season 2 – “Siege”

Elizabeth Mitchell and Nicholas Lea in V - Season 2 - "Siege" |©2011 ABC/Jack Rowand

Stars: Elizabeth Mitchell, Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch, Logan Huffman, Laura Vandervoort, Morena Baccarin, Scott Wolf, Charles Mesure Writer: Dean Widenmann Director: John Behring Network: ABC, airs Tuesday nights Original Telecast: February 15, 2011 All I can say is, “it’s about friggin’ time.” After a low point last week with the utterly lifeless “Concordia” episode of V, the show finally grows some alien balls to shake things up, kill off some characters and deliver a mission statement that probably should have happened a little earlier in the season. Yes, “Siege” is what V has desperately needed – a cleaning house episode […]Read On »

TV Review: GLEE – Season 2 – “Comeback”

Chord Overstreet goes all Justin Bieber in GLEE - Season 2 - "Comeback" | ©2011 Fox/Adam Rose

Stars: Dianna Agron, Chris Colfer, Jessalyn Gilsig, Jane Lynch, Jayma Mays, Kevin McHale, Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Matthew Morrison, Amber Riley, Mark Salling, Jenna Ushkowitz Writer: Ryan Murphy Director: Bradley Buechler Network: Fox, airs Tuesday nights Original Telecast: February 15, 2011 Occasionally GLEE has the tendency to smack the audience over the head with the theme for the episode. This week ran the borderline with the title “Comeback”, and by rights every so often someone on screen would say that they were having a comeback, planning a comeback, or getting ready for a comeback. I’m not really sure why the […]Read On »

Darren Criss in GLEE - Season 2 - "Special Education" | ©2010 Fox/Justin Lubin

When GLEE co-creator Ryan Murphy revealed he wanted to find a compatible love interest for gay high school student Kurt (Chris Colfer) this season, everyone immediately assumed it would be Blaine (Darren Criss) – the prep school singing prodigy who has become best friends with Kurt. It’s been a will they or won’t they dance, that Murphy and his fellow co-creators Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk have managed tact and care. For Criss, he admits he’s grateful and overwhelmed by the reception he’s received for his portrayal of the out and proud Blaine. It was a little over a year […]Read On »

TV Review: THE CAPE – SEASON ONE – “The Lich Pt. 1”

David Lyons in THE CAPE - Season 1 | ©2011 NBC

Stars: David Lyons, Keith David, Summer Glau, James Frain, Jennifer Ferrin, Ryan Wynott, Dorian Missick, Martin Klebba, Tom Noonan, Anil Kumar, Glenn Fitzgerald, Richard Schiff Writer: William Wheeler Director: Karen Gaviola Network: NBC, Mondays @ 9 PM Airdate: February 14, 2011 THE CAPE generally does a good job of maintaining a sense of comic book integrity, balancing the genre’s conventions without tipping over into things that don’t work. However, in “The Lich Pt. 1,” a cliffhanger that will resolve next week, the attempt to do Fifties-style horror falls short. The reason for this is that unless the viewer hasn’t checked […]Read On »

TV Review: THE CHICAGO CODE – Season 1 – “Hog Butcher”

Jennifer Beals, Jason Clarke and Delroy Lindo in THE CHICAGO CODE - Season 1 - "Hog Butcher" | ©2011 Fox/Jeffrey Garland

Stars: Delroy Lindo, Billy Lush, Matt Lauria, Jennifer Beals, Jason Clarke, Devin Kelley and Todd Williams Writers: Patrick Massett, John Zinman Director:  Clark Johnson Network: Fox, airs Monday nights Original Telecast: February 14, 2011 I said last week, I’ll say it again, THE CHICAGO CODE is shaping up to be the next great Fox drama. I really don’t care for TV cop dramas. Aside from the occasional LAW & ORDER, they bore me – and it’s clear they bore most TV writers, because very little has been done with the genre to shake things up since Shawn Ryan (CODE’s creator) […]Read On »

Stars: Zachary Levi, Yvonne Strahovski, Adam Baldwin, Joshua Gomez, Vic Sahay, Scott Krinsky, Sarah Lancaster, Ryan McPartlin, Mark Christopher Lawrence, Bonita Friedericy Writers: Nicholas Wootton Director: Paul Marks Network: NBC, airs Monday nights Original Telecast: February 14, 2011 I’m pretty sure I have a new favorite episode from Season 4 of CHUCK and that’s “Vs. The Cat Squad.” The set-up is a simple – Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) doesn’t have anyone she can invite to her and Chuck’s (Zachary Levi) engagement party, so he does a little digging and finds out she was part of a CIA super-group of sexy spies […]Read On »

TV Review: SPARTACUS: GODS OF THE ARENA – “Beneath the Mask”

Marisa Ramirez and Dustin Clare in SPARTACUS: GODS OF THE ARENA | ©2011 Starz

Stars: Lucy Lawless, John Hannah, Peter Mensah, Dustin Clare, Jaime Murray Writer: Seamus Kevin Fahey & Misha Green, Created by Steven S. DeKnight Director: Brendan Maher Network: STARZ, airs Friday nights Original Telecast: February 11th, 2010 So last episode of SPARTACUS: GODS OF THE ARENA, Titus (Jeffrey Thomas) came back to the House of Batiatus to act as the head of the household. This not only ruffled the feathers of Batiatus (John Hannah) and Lucretia (Lucy Lawless) but it effectively crapped all over what they had been trying to accomplish to elevate their house. Lucretia and Gaia (Jamie Murray) had […]Read On »
