Film Festival Report: Best Bits from the 2013 AFI FEST

By PAUL ZIMMERMAN

With a deft blend of Hollywood A-list films (Tom Hanks in SAVING MR BANKS, Ben Stiller’s THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY) and odd, out of the way fare (the acclaimed documentary JODOROWSKY’S DUNE, the slapstick comedy AWFUL NICE), the recent AFI FEST 2013 didn’t not disappoint. Stars: Austin Stoker, Darwin Joston, Laurie Zimmer Writer: John Carpenter Director: John Carpenter Distributor: Scream Factory Suggested Retail Price: $29.93 There’s been a nice trend with John Carpenter movies being reissued on Blu-ray as of late, which is a good thing and the latest is his 1976 pre-HALLOWEEN movie ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13. While it’s no secret Carpenter loves westerns, he’s never been given the chance to direct a full-on western (though he’s scripted a couple), so many of his films do have that western flavor to it (THE THING, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, GHOSTS OF MARS). With ASSAULT, Carpenter […]Read On »
