One of the best episodes this season “The House Guest” proved to be full of all kinds of twists and turns and surprises. Elijah (Daniel Gillies) is still dead on the floor of Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon’s (Ian Somerhalder) basement dungeon and that’s kind of a problem since he’s virtually indestructible and if anyone removes the dagger he comes back to life instantly. I think the safe thing to do would be to crate him up, cover the box with extremely heavy chains, and dump him off in the deepest part of the ocean they can find.

Speaking of removing the dagger, Luka (Bryton James) and his father Dr. Martin (Randy J. Goodwin) get the idea to mystically enter the Salvatore home and revive Elijah. Bad move on their part, since it all ends in tears and Luka as one well-done witch. The only problem with killing him off, is that we never really got to connect with him as a character, so it’s kind of “MEH” that he died. Dr. Martin of course gets bent on vengeance for his son’s death and meets his own end at the hands and fangs of Catherine (Nina Dobrev) and Stefan. But, not before he un-muzzles Bonnie and gives back her powers! Plus now she is the ONLY one who know how to kill Klaus when he comes knocking.

On other Bonnie (Katerina Graham) fronts, Elena (Nina Dobrev) gave her blessing for Bonnie to date Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen). This was a really nice moment for the two of them considering everything they’ve been through thus far. It kind of binds them as literal sisters, and I can’t wait to see how this only strengthens their relationship.

On other relationship fronts Caroline (Candice Accola) had her portion of the episode written ala Joss Whedon. We found out that she can sing, she gets Matt (Zach Roerig) back, and then has him pretty much die in front of her. She vamps out and feeds him blood to save him, but when he wakes up, he is none to happy to find out that he’s a fang-banger (and he blames his sister’s death on her). An all too brief happy ending there.

There was a charming bit of AT&T product placement with Caroline’s iPad and the photo on it only served to remind us that she was just a nice sort of vacuous girl who was… Miss Mystic Falls.

There was no party in this episode, but there was a live band at The Grill, so I guess that makes up for it. I really didn’t realize until someone pointed it out to me that there is a party in almost every episode of this series. Mystic Falls loves to get down and boogie!

The big ending with the return of Isobel (Mia Kirshner) not only sets the stage for a whole new series of revelations, it also completely screws Alaric (Matt Davis) and Jenna’s (Sarah Canning) relationship; since he just told her his wife was murdered the same night she turns up on the doorstep. Whoopsie!
