On Fox’s WAYWARD PINES, Thursdays at 9 PM, we’re in a small town that contains an epic, one might even say world-changing, secret. Based on a trilogy of books by Blake Crouch, WAYWARD PINES doesn’t try to keep us guessing for the whole of its ten-episode miniseries run. Instead, adaptor/executive producer/show runner Chad Hodge provides the big reveal at the halfway mark and seems to be spending the rest of the show investigating the many, many ramifications. Hodge, who created the series THE PLAYBOY CLUB and worked on RUNAWAY and TRU CALLING, also is working on a biographical film about […]Read On »

Melissa Leo won a Supporting Actress Oscar for her work in THE FIGHTER as Alice Ward, the real-life mother of prize fighter Mickey Ward, played in the film by Mark Wahlberg. Alice is a tough customer, which describes many of the characters played by the New York-born Leo, including her Baltimore police detective in five seasons of HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREETS and her New Orleans flood survivor Toni Bernette in HBO’s TREME. “Tough” is perhaps the mildest way to refer to Leo’s Nurse Pam on Fox’s WAYWARD PINES, Thursdays at 9 PM. Adapted by Chad Hodge from the books […]Read On »

In Fox’s miniseries WAYWARD PINES, Thursdays at 9 PM, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) is understandably upset. Not only is he trapped in the title town, where people are executed over transgressions like referring to their lives pre-arrival, but he finds his partner/ex-lover Kate Hewson (Carla Gugino) claiming she’s lived here for twelve years, even though she’s only been missing a few weeks. Morever, Kate says she’s been married for years to local toymaker Harold Balinger, played by Reed Diamond. Native New Yorker Diamond is no stranger to television or to genre. Toronto International Film Festival Wrap Up: Part 3 – The Cold

THE UNKNOWN KNOWN | ©2013 Weinstein Company

It’s time to conclude what happened at the Toronto International Film Festival by dividing up the films into three categories. So here are the winners, losers and something in-between so just for fun I’ve broken them down into buzz terms, HOT, WARM and COLD. Part 3: THE COLD (BUZZ+CRITICAL REACTION+AUDIENCE COMMENTS) YOU ARE HERE Road trip comedy drama with Owen Wilson and Zach Galifianakis CONSENSUS: Writer/director Matthew Weiner’s surprising limp big screen debut. The leads are irritating, the plot so-so, the overall effect dull. Maybe Weiner just too tired after obsessing over every MAD MAN detail. Would make a good […]Read On »
