PREACHER: Ruth Negga on bringing Tulip to life – Interview

Ruth Negga as Tulip in PREACHER | © 2016 AMC

When we meet Ruth Negga’s character, Tulip O’Hare, in the first episode of PREACHER, she is ecstatically winning a fight to the death in the front seat of a car, biting off part of a man’s face in the process. Later, Tulip enlivens two young children’s otherwise dull afternoon by giving the kids an exciting arts and crafts lesson in how to make an improvised rocket launcher. Clearly, Tulip is not a standard TV heroine. Then again, AMC’s PREACHER, Sundays at 9 PM, is not a standard good and evil show. Tulip’s former and perhaps future lover Jesse Custer (Dominic […]Read On »

Daniel Sousa (Enver Gjokaj) is in charge, but office manager Rose, played by Lesley Boone, is the one who holds things together on a day-to-day basis. In its second season, ABC’s Tuesday night MARVEL’S AGENT CARTER finds the title heroine, played by Hayley Atwell, relocating from 1940s New York to 1940s Los Angeles. Peggy Carter, a British special agent working for the Strategic Scientific Reserve (the precursor of S.H.I.E.L.D. – AGENT CARTER s in fact a spin-off of MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD), spent the first season trying to clear billionaire inventor Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) of treason charges. It would be an understatement to say that Carter’s skills were underestimated because of her gender. In Season 1, she bonded with fellow agent Daniel Sousa, played by […]Read On »

In Fox’s miniseries WAYWARD PINES, Thursdays at 9 PM, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) is understandably upset. Not only is he trapped in the title town, where people are executed over transgressions like referring to their lives pre-arrival, but he finds his partner/ex-lover Kate Hewson (Carla Gugino) claiming she’s lived here for twelve years, even though she’s only been missing a few weeks. Morever, Kate says she’s been married for years to local toymaker Harold Balinger, played by Reed Diamond. Native New Yorker Diamond is no stranger to television or to genre. In Season 2 of MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD, ABC Tuesdays at 9 PM, Clark Gregg’s character Phil Coulson has been having quite a time of it. Sure, former S.H.I.E.L.D. boss Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) did make Coulson the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D. at the end of last season, but not before bringing Coulson back from the dead with alien DNA. This season, Coulson has had to cope with the alien DNA causing him to uncontrollably draw maps that turned out to lead to an alien-built city. One of his agents, protégé Skye (Chloe Bennet), turns out to have her […]Read On »

On ABC’s MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD, now in its second season Tuesdays at 9 PM, all of the characters are in the midst of crisis. S.H.I.E.L.D. director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) was appointed by previous director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), but since almost nobody knows this, Coulson can’t say this to alternate shield director Robert Gonzalez (Edward James Olmos), who thinks Coulson has gone rogue. Coulson’s protégé Skye (Chloe Bennet) has found that she has genetic superpowers that allow her to create earthquakes and scare the hell out of her. In the (so-far) two-season history of MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD, ABC Tuesdays at 9 PM, just about all of the characters have gone through massive changes. Agent Phil Coulson, played by Clark Gregg, has learned that he was actually brought back from the dead courtesy of alien technology; not only that, he’s been appointed Director of the whole S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, courtesy of secretly-alive former Director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Chloe Bennet’s orphan computer hacker Skye has discovered she’s an Inhuman, with the ability to bring buildings down; she’s also found that her father Kal (Kyle MachLachlan) is alive and […]Read On »

Before you say it, yes, we already know that MARVEL’S AGENT CARTER was sort of a spinoff from the current ongoing series on ABC AGENT OF SHIELD. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, another spinoff may be in the works that both Marvel and ABC have signed off on based on current plotlines happening on AOS in its second season. This comes just one day before the debut of MARVEL’S DAREDEVIL on Netflix, where the first season will be available come Friday, April 10. Now you may be asking, how many Marvel television series do we need? Given that Netflix […]Read On »

In ABC’s MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD, which comes back for the second half of its second season Tuesday, March 3, at 9 PM, our heroes have their hands full. Moreover, her alien father, Calvin Zabo (Kyle MacLachlan), is extremely angry at Coulson for killing the murderer of Skye’s mother before Calvin got a chance to do it himself. Adding to the complications is the arrival of Robert Gonzalez. Not […]Read On »

On ABC’s freshman eight-episode series MARVEL’S AGENT CARTER, Tuesdays at 9 PM, we’re with the resourceful Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) just after the end of World War II. Carter is part of the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR). Carter is the SSR’s most valuable asset, a fact that is lost on most of her male colleagues. No matter – Carter has no problem saving the day without credit. A good thing, too, as SSR will one day become S.H.I.E.L.D., which is explored in the present day in MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD (which will resume its second season when Season 1 […]Read On »
