Showtime’s Sunday night drama CITY ON A HILL is set in 1990s Boston. Rule-breaking FBI agent Jackie Rohr (Kevin Bacon) and erstwhile upstanding district attorney DeCourcy Ward (Aldis Hodge) join forces to track down the crime crew of Frankie Ryan, played by Jonathan Tucker. Frankie and his team specialize in robbing armored cars, but during their last job, Frankie’s brother Jimmy (Mark O’Brien) got hot-tempered and shot one of the guards, necessitating (in Frankie’s eyes) killing the other two witnesses. The title of Showtime’s new Sunday-night series CITY ON A HILL refers to early ‘90s Boston. “The irony abounds,” as several characters might say. Aldis Hodge plays Assistant District Attorney DeCourcy Ward, who’s just arrived from Brooklyn. By the end of the first episode, Ward has been so manipulated by both the Boston police and his own office that he’s willing to do just about anything to avoid further abuse. It’s easy to feel for FBI Special Agent Mike Weston, the character Shawn Ashmore plays on Fox’s THE FOLLOWING, now in its third season, Mondays at 9 PM. Mike has been tortured, taunted, at one point abandoned by his mentor, fellow agent Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon), seen his own father murdered on camera and been antagonized into breaking the law and killing one of the people responsible (which Ryan helped cover up). Ashmore, who plays Bobby Drake aka Iceman in the X-MEN feature film series, does his best to talk about THE FOLLOWING without giving away too much. At a […]Read On »

Interview: Mark Strong lets the LOW WINTER SUN set

Mark Strong as Frank Agnew in LOW WINTER SUN - Season 1 | ©2013 AMC/Frank Ockenfels 3

American television frequently remakes series that originated on British television: ALL IN THE FAMILY and THE OFFICE are two of the more successful examples. The crime drama LOW WINTER SUN, set and shot in Detroit, is a remake of the 2006 series of the same name that was set in Edinburgh, Scotland. What makes LOW WINTER SUN unusual is that Mark Strong, who starred in the first version, is recreating his role as Frank Agnew for AMC’s edition, which is airing its first ten-episode season Sunday nights at 10 PM. Frank a police detective who is coerced by a colleague, […]Read On »
