CD Review: LES MISERABLES soundtrack

LES MISERABLES soundtrack | ©2012 Universal Music

Even when musicals deal with less savory subjects like dueling New York gangs or starving English orphans, there’s always a romantic layer of production polish to give our delicate sensibilities a comfort zone from the muck and grime of real life, but by immersing viewers in a sewer of excrement along with its lovestruck duets, LES MISERABLES shouts aloud that it’s a stage-to-screen game changer. There’s an unheard level of primal scream singing here that throws us into the gutter along with Victor Hugo’s period Parisians, who sing about the lack of justice (or the psychotic belief in it) for […]Read On »

Rating: PG Stars (voices): Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Isla Fisher, Jude Law, Dakota Goyo Writer: David Lindsay-Abaire, based on the short film and book by William Joyce Director: Peter Ramsey Distributor: DreamWorks Animation SKG RISE OF THE GUARDIANS is a 3D animated feature that brushes off the hoarfrost from notions like the importance of a child’s sense of wonder and makes something entertaining and even sometimes moving from it. Scripted by David Lindsay-Abaire from William Joyce’s short film and novel, RISE OF THE GUARDIANS actually feels like a fairytale, the kind that used to enthrall most of us […]Read On »

Movie Review: BUTTER

BUTTER movie poster | ©2012 Radius/The Weinstein Company

Rating: R Stars: Jennifer Garner, Ty Burrell, Hugh Jackman, Olivia Wilde, Rob Corddry, Ashley Greene, Alicia Silverstone, Yara Shahidi Writer: Jason Micallef Director: Jim Field Smith Distributor: Radius/The Weinstein Co. Release Date: October 5, 2012 Satire is a particularly tough form of parody, and political satire is even tougher. Timing may not be everything, but there’s no question that having a point of reference that is still fresh in people’s minds is important. BUTTER is therefore handicapped by being too late to the table, but it might still salvage itself if it had something new to say. Instead, it tries […]Read On »

Movie Review: REAL STEEL

REAL STEEL movie poster | ©2011 DreamWorks

Stars: Hugh Jackman, Dakota Goyo, Evangeline Lilly     Writer: Screenplay by John Gatins  Story by Dan Gilroy & Jeremy Levin Director: Shawn Levy Distributor: Touchstone Pictures & Dreamworks Pictures Release Date: October 7, 2011 I will freely admit that I expected little or nothing from REAL STEEL. I kind of looked at like a film version of “Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots” with Wolverine. I was pleasantly surprised at a film that has depth, nicely crafted story, and a lot of very touching scenes. Plus, there’s enough boxing and robots to make a ROCKY fan happy. The basic plot […]Read On »

Cool Clip: REAL STEEL teaser trailer is here plus new stills

Hugh Jackman in REAL STEEL | ©2010 Dreamworks

No, it’s not a TRANSFORMERS spin-off. Instead REAL STEEL is a crazy new science-fiction action film starring Hugh Jackman who plays a promoter who manages robot vs. robot boxing matches. It sounds crazy, but this thing could actually work. It also has Steven Spielberg as an executive producer and A NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM‘s Shawn Levy at the helm. To get a sneak peak, check out the brand new stills and the teaser trailer below. The film opens October 7, 2011.
