TV Review: DOCTOR WHO – Series 9 Premiere – “The Magician’s Apprentice” and “The Witch’s Familiar”

Stars: Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman, Michelle Gomez Writer: Steven Moffat Director: Hettie Macdonald Original Telecast: September 19th & 26th, 2014 Network: BBC America The first season of DOCTOR WHO where a new regeneration of The Doctor is introduced is always a bit of a dicey phase. The Doctor is never really who is he is going to be with his new face, and you kind of have to get around all of the more unstable parts of his personality post regeneration. Having said that I did enjoy Peter Capaldi’s first season as the new 12th Doctor. The writing wasn’t completely […]Read On »

Brian Cox stars as Daddy in THE GAME on BBC America | © 2014 BBC America

Although he plays all sorts of roles, Brian Cox is known for portraying men who are bold, in charge and often devious. In addition to being the original Hannibal Lektor (as it was then spelled) in MANHUNTER, a few of the Scotland-born actor’s more memorable film roles include Robert McKee in ADAPTATION, Col. William Stryker in X-MEN 2, King Agamemnon in TROY and Russian spy Ivan Simonov in the RED films, plus and BBC executive Sydney Newman in the telefilm AN ADVENTURE IN SPACE AND TIME (about the early years of DOCTOR WHO). Now Cox is adding another character to […]Read On »

Stars: Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman Writer: Steven Moffat  Director: Rachel Talalay  Original Telecast: November 8, 2014 Network: BBC America Once again I find myself faced with writing a review of DOCTOR WHO and having to drop all kinds of spoilers to do an effective job. I usually shy away from spoilers, but I just have so many questions buzzing around in my head after “Death in Heaven” that I have to bring up things that we game changing, or even just confusing in this season’s finale. Again, let’s just start with Danny Pink (Sam Anderson) is dead. Still dead that […]Read On »

Joe’s love has been murdered by the KGB, so he has vengeance on his mind, while some strange office politics play out at headquarters, where Daddy (Brian Cox) rules the department. Then there’s the possibility of nuclear war, due to a particular secret that the KGB is keen to […]Read On »

Stars: Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman Writer: Steven Moffat Director: Rachel Talay Original Telecast: November 1, 2014 Network: BBC America Ordinarily with my DOCTOR WHO reviews I try to avoid spoilers, but with everything that happens in “Dark Water” I really feel the need to actively discuss the major plot points that are big game changers for everyone’s favorite Timelord. Let’s just start with Danny Pink (Sam Anderson) is dead. That’s where the episode begins and I know it’s supposed to be a huge emotional moment, but Danny just hasn’t had enough going for him to make me care that he […]Read On »

So one last trip to somewhere nice is in order. That somewhere nice, and oh yes exotic, happens to be the Orient Express. In space. So it’s […]Read On »
