Movie Review: DETENTION

DETENTION movie poster | ©2012 Samuel Goldwyn

Stars: Josh Hutcherson, Shanley Caswell, Spencer Locke, Dane Cook, Parker Bagley Writers: Joseph Kahn and Mark Palermo Director: Joseph Kahn Distributor: Samuel Goldwyn Release Date: April 13, 2012 DETENTION is being sold as tongue-in-cheek horror, a la SCREAM. It actually is closer to full-blown parody, with a multitude of filmic targets from the Eighties and Nineties. It is unclear who exactly this is made for, because the people who grew up with the movies referenced here have now seen other parodies, while modern real-life high school students tend to have more recent pop culture frames of reference. As to the […]Read On »

ASSIGNMENT X: The Shakespeare readings at Joss Whedon’s house have been talked about for years.  Were you already part of that group, or did MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING kind of come out of the blue for you? KRANZ: No, I had done a reading of MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM. I […]Read On »

Interview: WRATH OF THE TITANS composer Javier Navarrete fights for gods and men

WRATH OF THE TITANS soundtrack | ©2012 Water Tower Records

In WRATH OF THE TITANS, a menagerie of ancient beasts and angry gods are unleashed upon the world of men, all due to the declining prayers directed at Zeus and his brethren on Mount Olympus. However, Hollywood’s cinematic worship towards ancient Greece’s supreme being, let alone legendary deities in general, is more than boisterous given the current films inspired by the mythic clashes of old. Not only are these pictures a boon for today’s CGI effects wizards to indulge in their Ray Harryhausen-inspired love of stop-motion giant monsters, but they’re equally heaven-sent for composers to unleash the own musically epic […]Read On »

There may or may not be one more scene added to THE AVENGERS before its release. At a press conference on Thursday, AVENGERS star Robert Downey, Jr. announced, “We are shooting one more scene tonight. Not kidding.” At a second press conference immediately following this, AVENGERS writer/director Joss Whedon was asked about this. His response: “It’s Robert. Of course he’s kidding.” Who’s the real kidder here? Tell us what you think! Our guess, is it might be a new coda that will appear after the end credits like all the Marvel movies tend to drop in at the last minute. […]Read On »

Rating: R Stars: Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, Brian White, Amy Acker Writers: Joss Whedon & Drew Goddard Director: Drew Goddard Distributor: Lionsgate Release Date: April 13, 2012 The first thing that should be said about THE CABIN IN THE WOODS is that it is an awesome movie. Unfortunately, the next thing that must be said is that discussing specifics about what makes it so awesome is liable to dampen the experience for those seeing it for the first time. The good news is that it holds up just great on […]Read On »

TV Review: TOUCH – Season 2 – “Entanglement”

Danny Glover and Kiefer Sutherland in TOUCH - Season 1 - "Entanglement" | ©2012 Fox/Kelsey McNeal

Stars: Kiefer Sutherland, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, David Mazouz, Danny Glover Writer: Chris Levinson Director: Milan Cheylov Network: Fox, airs Thursday nights Original Telecast: April 12, 2012 One of the realities of TOUCH is that there’s generally a lot going on as the story paths weave and interchange. “Entanglement” may be this episode’s title, but it could just as easily have been the series title, as well. Martin Bohm (Kiefer Sutherland), who lost his wife when the World Trade Center came down during the 9/11 attacks, is trying to raise his autistic son Jake (David Mazouz) who can’t speak. The trick is that Jake “sees” and apparently “feels” […]Read On »

Well, by now you know that in some mind boggling voting process Jessica Sanchez got the least amount of votes. However, the judges saved her from elimination to sing again. Elise Testone and Joshua Ledet were also in the bottom three. OK, before we move on just a bit on the comments from Jimmy Iovine. I love this part of the […]Read On »
