CD Review: TO THE WONDER soundtrack

By DANIEL SCHWEIGER 07/04/2013

Mea culpa, but forgive me if I have yet to see Terence Malick’s TO THE WONDER, having been perhaps permanently scared off from his visually striking miasmas after the stupefyingly boring and pretentious movie-as-art instillation that was TREE OF LIFE. That being said, the truly wondrous, and always-entrancing score that Hanan Townshend has created for Malick’s latest existential outing just might get me to watch it. As a New Zealand expatriate based in Malick’s Austin digs, Townshend captures a universal feeling of longing in his concert piece-cum-film score, one of those few soundtracks that captures the melodic potential of what […]Read On »

CD review: DARK SKIES soundtrack

By DANIEL SCHWEIGER
DARK SKIES soundtrack | ©2013 Void Recordings

If Blumhouse Productions is literally going to set every one of their movies in a house, then it’s likely their economically advantageous location choices won’t get creepier than the alien home invasion that rains down from DARK SKIES. Infinitely scarier in every respect than the far more notoriously successful THE PURGE, DARK SKIES gains no small share of its effectivenes from Joseph Bishara’s surprisingly restrained, but no less imaginative score. Taking a completely different direction from the violent demonic antics he’d conjured for INSIDIOUS (in which he played one such creature), DARK SKIES is the semi-musical approximation of the evil […]Read On »

Movie Review: DESPICABLE ME 2

By ABBIE BERNSTEIN
DESPICABLE ME 2 movie poster | ©2013 Universal Pictures

Rating: PG Stars (voices): Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Benjamin Bratt, Miranda Cosgrove, Russell Brand Writers: Ken Daurio & Cinco Paul Directors: Pierre Coffin & Chris Renaud Distributor: Universal Release Date: July 3, 2013 Between the 2010 release of the original DESPICABLE ME and its new sequel, DESPICABLE ME 2, the filmmakers seem to have figured out that their primary selling point is not their main character Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), now a reformed villain and not the, well, despicable figure he was in the original. It’s not even the trio of cute little girls he adopted last time around. […]Read On »

TV Review: WILFRED – Season 3 – “Suspicion”

By RACHEL REITSLEFF 07/03/2013
Barry Watson and Elijah Wood in WILFRED - Season 3 - "Suspicion" | ©2013 FX/Prashant Gupta

Stars: Elijah Wood, Jason Gann, Dorian Brown, Barry Watson Writer: David Baldy, series created by Jason Gann & Adam Zwar, adapted for American television by David Zuckerman Director: Randall Einhorn. Network: FX, Thursdays @ 10 PM Airdate: June 27, 2013 “Suspicion” is one of WILFRED’s frequent forays into subject matter so weird and so not-to-be-found-anywhere-else that the question is less a matter of whether it’s funny or not than where it’s going. As is often the case when the show suits up and jumps out of the plane into the wild topical yonder, we get a bit more structured closure […]Read On »

TV Review: UNDER THE DOME – Season 1 – “The Fire”

By PETER BROWN 07/02/2013
Linda (Natalie Martinez) tries to save a life in UNDER THE DOME "The Fire" | (c) 2013 CBS

Cast: Dean Norris, Rachelle Lefevre, Alexander Koch, Mike Vogel, Natalie Martinez, Aisha Hinds, Jolene Purdy, Britt Robinson Writer: Rick Cleveland Director: Jack Bender Network: CBS, airs Mondays @ 10 p.m. Original Telecast: July 1, 2013 “It means (long dramatic pause) … we’re all gonna die in here.”  – Norrie (Mackenzie Lintz) on UNDER THE DOME “The Fire” The thing that cracks me up most about Stephen King made-for-TV specials has always been the acting. Or lack of it. While UNDER THE DOME may be interesting from a pure storyline point-of-view, the acting and dialogue in the first two episodes is […]Read On »

Aaron Ashmore, Eddie McClintock, Joanne Kelly, Allison Scagliotti and Saul Rubinek in WAREHOUSE 13 - Season 4 - "All The Time in the World" | ©2013 Syfy/Steve Wilkie

In Part Two of our exclusive interview with Syfy Channel’s WAREHOUSE 13 show runner Jack Kenny, he talks about writing for the actors and deepening the characters. ASSIGNMENT X: Is Agent Steve Jinks, played by Aaron Ashmore, getting a romantic relationship? JACK KENNY: He runs into his ex on a case. His ex is a U.S. Marshal and Charlie Weber plays him. It’s kind of fun. It doesn’t feel gay or straight – it’s just, they have relationship trouble the way anybody has relationship trouble, and they just play it out, and you go, “Oh, I wish they could make […]Read On »

Movie Review: WHITE HOUSE DOWN

By ABBIE BERNSTEIN 06/28/2013
WHITE HOUSE DOWN movie poster | ©2013 Sony Pictures

Rating: PG-13 Stars: Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, Maggie Gyllenhaal, James Woods, Jason Clarke, Richard Jenkins, Joey King Writer: James Vanderbilt Director: Roland Emmerich Distributor: Columbia Pictures Release Date: June 27, 2013 It’s easy to like WHITE HOUSE DOWN, even as we acknowledge that it seems awfully unlikely. Granted, the U.S. government can be dysfunctional, but it doesn’t usually have the kinds of lapses that would lead to a cadre of mixed mercenaries and ideologues invading1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, armed with actual weapons rather than words. Part of the film deals with uncovering the question of who these people are and what […]Read On »

By A.C. FERRANTE
Mazda CX-9 | ©2013 Mazda

Car Manufacturer: Mazda Model: 2013 Mazda CX-9 Suggested Retail Price: Starting at $29,785 As cars became smaller and SUVs became stale and conservative in their design, building a nice, robust vehicle stopped being a major priority. Thank goodness for Mazda, as the MAZDA CX-9 proves you can not only create a well put-together family vehicle but you can also create a gas conscious and space conscious car at the same time. The CX-9 is a new generation SUV – one that can seat up to seven people, has ample leg room for everyone and also provides a safe, sturdy and […]Read On »
