Fox’s new series ALCATRAZ, Mondays at 9 PM, is the newest television offering from prolific producer J.J. Abrams. In the show, we learn that the maximum security prison on Alcatraz Island was closed fifty years ago, not for the reasons given to the public, but because all of the inmates disappeared overnight. When they begin showing up in present-day San Francisco, it’s up to a team played by Sam Neill, Sarah Jones, Jorge Garcia (who previously played Hugo “Hurley” Reyes for Abrams on LOST) and Parminder Nagra to track down the out-of-time miscreants and figure out what’s happened. As ALCATRAZ […]Read On »

TV Review: BOB’S BURGERS – Season 2 Premiere – “The Belchies”

Ollie, Andy and Louise on BOB'S BURGERS - Season 2 - "The Belchies" | ©2012 Fox

Voices: H. Jon Benjamin, John Roberts, Dan Mintz, Eugene Mirman, Kristin Schaal Writer: Jon Schroeder Directors: Boohwan Lin & Kyoungee Lin Network: Fox, airs Sunday nights Original Telecast: March 12, 2012 Last year when BOB’S BURGERS premiered, I was very harsh in my critique. This was not a very funny show initially and it had a long way to go in order to find its voice (and stay on the air). I’m happy to report, the second season premiere “The Belchies” re-introduces a stronger, funnier and more interesting BOB’S BURGERS. It’s amazing what one season of experimentation and storylines can […]Read On »

TV Review: ONCE UPON A TIME – Season 1 – “Red-Handed”

Meghan Ory in ONCE UPON A TIME - Season 1 - "Red-Handed" | ©2012 ABC/Jack Rowand

Stars: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Morrison, Robert Carlyle, Lana Parrilla, Jared Gilmore, Josh Dallas, Raphael Sbarge Writer: Jane Espenson Director: Ron Underwood Network: ABC, Sunday nights, 8 p.m. Original Telecast: March 11, 2012 There is something vaguely unsatisfying about the “Red-Handed” episode of ONCE UPON A TIME. It could be my mood, but the episode feels like more back story than actual moving along of the plot. Yes, I get that when you’re trying to spin a tale over the course of multiple seasons, you don’t want to play your cards too fast. Fair enough. But after a while, the returns start diminishing. Sure, it’s nice to know how Grumpy got […]Read On »

TV Review: AWAKE – Season 1 – “The Little Guy”

Dylan Minnette in AWAKE - Season 1 - "The Little Guy" | ©2012 NBC/Neil Jacobs

Stars: Jason Issacs, Laura Allen, Dylan Minnette, Cherry Jones, Steve Harris, Wilmer Valderrama, BD Wong Writer: Kyle Killen Director: David Slade Network: NBC, airs Thursday night Original Telecast: March 8, 2012 After establishing the very complex work of AWAKE where cop Michael Britten (Jason Isaacs) finds himself living in two different realities – one where a car accident claimed his wife and one where the crash claimed his son, this second episode “The Little Guy” settles into a really nice groove. The concept could still be challenging for normal viewers, but this episode makes the conceit go down real smooth, […]Read On »

TV Review: SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE – “Chosen Path”

Steven Dunlevy in SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE - "Chosen Path" | ©2012 Starz

Stars: Lucy Lawless, Liam McIntyre, Manu Bennett, Peter Mensah, Viva Bianca, Craig Parker Writer: Misha Green, Created by Steven S. DeKnight Director: Michael Hurst Network: STARZ, airs Friday nights Original Telecast: February 24, 2012 “Chosen Path” is an interesting new episode of SPARTACUS VENGEANCE. There’s a lot going on in the wake of the destruction of the gladiatorial arena of Capua, and while some of it is good, a lot seems pretty bad for those involved. Of course the subheading of this episode could be one of my favorite lines from CARNIVALE, “there ain’t no secret to dancing the cooch.” […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: GAME CHANGE writer Danny Strong on Sarah Palin, politics and more

On the set of GAME CHANGE with screenwriter Danny Strong | ©2012 HBO

GAME CHANGE is an apt title for what happened in the 2008 election when John McCain, the Republican nominee for President of the United States of America, selected then-Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin as his running mate. Even people who see eye to eye on nothing else can agree that what followed was not quite like anything else that had ever happened on the national stage. The book GAME CHANGE by Time Magazine editor-in-chief Mark Halperin and political journalist John Heilemann encompasses the entire 2008 election, including the Democratic contest between then-Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. The HBO film […]Read On »

AMERICAN IDOL Recap (and Photos): Jeremy Rosado Eliminated, Elise Testone in the bottom 2

Jeremy Rosado eliminated on AMERICAN IDOL Season 11 | ©2012 Fox/Michael Becker

Cast: Ryan Seacrest, Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson Network: Fox, airs Wednesdays and Thursdays @ 8 p.m. Original Telecast: March 8, 2012 It was an hour long elimination that should have been 15 minutes on the world’s greatest karaoke competition, AMERICAN IDOL. Well I lost the pool on when J.Lo would first sell herself out on IDOL during Season 11. I figured it was going to be a music video … instead it was a music video of an advertisement for one of her products. The other came nearly immediately after with a make-up ad featuring J.Lo. They also […]Read On »

TV Review: THE RIVER – Season 1 – “Doctor Emmet Cole”

Bruce Greenwood in THE RIVER - Season 1 - "Doctor Emmet Cole" | ©2012 ABC/Mario Perez

What started off as a promising and groundbreaking series as de-volved into an incredibly frustrating exercise in style over substance. Each week, there’s a promise of something big and major and each week, it ends up being a disappointment. Finally, a big mythology play happens with “Doctor Emmet Cole”. We […]Read On »

TV Recap and Photos: AMERICAN IDOL Top 13 does Whitney Houston and Stevie Wonder songs

Jessica Sanchez performs on AMERICAN IDOL - Season 11 - "Finalists Compete" | ©2012 Fox/Michael Becker

Cast: Ryan Seacrest, Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson Network: Fox, airs Wednesdays and Thursdays @ 8 p.m. Original Telecast: March 7, 2012 So it has been 400 episodes of awesome karaoke on the world’s greatest karaoke competition, AMERICAN IDOL. Sigh. This is depressing considering I probably have reviewed maybe 250 of these episodes. Anyway, this week the guys are taking on Stevie Wonder while the girls are taking on Whitney Houston. Oh because IDOL wouldn’t want to needlessly cash in on the tragedy of her death or something … wait, this is IDOL all they do is cash in […]Read On »
