RESIDENT ALIEN launches its fourth season on both the Syfy and USA Networks on Friday, June 6. The series, adapted by Chris Sheridan from the graphic novels by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse, stars Alan Tudyk as an extraterrestrial posing as Dr. Harry Vanderspiegle in the small mountain town of Patience, Colorado. Over time, Harry has gone from being fine with his mission of destroying humanity to becoming a protector of our species, though he still thinks we’re generally irrational and weak.
Season 3 ended on a cliffhanger, with Harry and his baby son Bridget (voiced by Andrea Geones) trapped on a Grey alien ship (they’re a different species than Harry). Meanwhile, a people-eating Mantid alien has assumed Harry’s human form (and is therefore also played by Tudyk) and is impersonating him back in Patience.
Tudyk, originally from Plano, Texas, is constantly working as an actor, both onscreen and doing voice work. He won an Annie for his vocal performance as King Candy in WRECK-IT-RALPH and was nominated for an Emmy for his lead performance in the short-form series he created, CON MAN, which was loosely based on Tudyk’s experience as a guest at fan conventions. Tudyk can currently be seen and heard reprising his role from the feature ROGUE ONE: A STORY WARS STORY as the droid K-2S0 in the second season of ANDOR on Disney+.
Tudyk found himself working a little harder than expected when, in addition to playing both regular Harry and Mantid Harry, he directed the first two episodes of RESIDENT ALIEN Season 4. Unfortunately, both Sheridan, who also serves as showrunner and executive producer, and executive producer/main director Robert McNeill, were both out sick and unable to provide much aid during that period.

On the premiere carpet for RESIDENT ALIEN Season 4 at the London Hotel in West Hollywood, Tudyk makes time to answer a few questions, starting with how he coped with directing, playing two characters and generally running the production for a few weeks.
“Luckily, I have my wife, Charissa Barton, who was my ‘assistant,’” he makes quotation marks with his fingers. “That was the official name for her, but she’s a director, she’s a choreographer, and she’s directed more than me. So, she was on set to watch, especially when I was acting, to be able to tell me, ‘Yeah, that was a swing and a miss,’ he laughs, “and was right there with me all through preproduction. So, when [Sheridan and McNeill] were down, it was Team Tudyk. And it was really great. We really enjoyed it.”
While Tudyk had previously directed CON MAN, “It was short-form comedy. I really enjoyed that. This is my first time directing an hour-long, and I’m really learning, doing this hour-long, that comedy is where I’m most excited, what I have most ideas about.”
Does Harry as a character live in Tudyk’s head between seasons, or is it a hard reboot when it’s time to start playing the character again?
“No, he’s tucked away in there somewhere. He doesn’t come out. The laugh has kind of become mine. It’s sad, it’s a little upsetting.” Tudyk demonstrates Harry’s extraterrestrial laugh.
