With all the Christmas songs on the radio and in the mall, corporate sponsored holiday specials taking over the airwaves and department store commercials encouraging you to BUY, BUY, BUY, it becomes harder and harder each year to find that perfect gift for someone special.
That’s where ASSIGNMENT X comes in with our annual Holiday Gift Guide. We dig deep, so you don’t have to and have come up with a whole slew of books, music, games, toys and more that should satisfy the pop culture addict on your gift-giving list.
So without further ado, welcome to ASSIGNMENT X’s 2011 Holiday Gift Guide:
FARSCAPE – THE COMPLETE SERIES
Suggested Retail Price: $199.95
Cool Yule Factor: If STAR TREK and its various ‘90s and 2000s iterations represented the old guard from THE NEXT GENERATION to ENTERPRISE, FARSCAPE represented the new hip kid on the block – a anarchic, crazy little sci-fi epic following astronaut John Crichton (Ben Browder) who gets sucked into a wormhole where he befriends various aliens as they travel the galaxy on a living ship dubbed the Moya in his attempt to find his way back home. All four seasons are compiled in a gorgeous set and a high-def transfer. Of course, FARSCAPE fans also get loads of amazing bonus features too including a new documentary on the making of the series featuring the cast and crew, an older behind-the-scenes special, archival documentaries, 31 audio commentaries, deleted scenes, TV promos and just about everything else that could be jammed in here. This is the motherload for FARSCAPE fans and reminds you what a groundbreaking, intelligent and fun series this was. The only downside is it’s missing the mini-series wrap-up THE PEACEKEEPER WARS which is owned by a different distributor, but it’s a minor quibble in an otherwise wonderfully put together set.

HARRY POTTER – THE COMPLETE 8-FILM COLLECTION
Suggested Retail Price: $139.99
Cool Yule Factor: Now that Harry Potter has vanquished all his on-screen demons with the release of HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS – PART 2, it’s time for one big box set to corral all eight films. Granted, this is a set for those who want the movies only (and not the extended cuts or bonus features), but for a Potter fan that wants the basics, this is a perfect holiday collection.

LORD OF THE RINGS – THE MOTION PICTURE TRILOGY EXTENDED EDITION
Suggested Retail Price: $119.98
Cool Yule Factor: With THE HOBBIT on its way next year, get ready for the extended editions of the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy in high-definition directed by Peter Jackson. THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS, THE TWO TOWERS and RETURN OF THE KING are all here, as well as hours of bonus features. Most fans prefer the extended cuts to the theatrical ones (more character, more story, more everything) and Jackson made sure they deliver as their own entities and not some shameless cash grab. A great set at an excellent price.

JURASSIC PARK – THE ULTIMATE TRILOGY
Suggested Retail Price: $79.98
Cool Yule Factor: How does Universal follow-up last year’s great BACK TO THE FUTURE trilogy on Blu-ray – with JURASSIC PARK. All three films are here (the first two directed by Steven Spielberg) and the third by Joe Johnston. All have their charms and feature state-of-the-art dinosaur visual effects. The set is also chock full of brand new special features (documentaries, etc.). The movies look better than ever with the first being the best, but THE LOST WORLD has that great T-Rex terrorizing the city moment for its finale. This may not be the best sci-fi franchise out there, but it certainly has held you quite well over the years.

STAR WARS – THE COMPLETE SAGA
Suggested Retail Price: $139.99
Cool Yule Factor: Say what you will about George Lucas’ epic space saga, he still has managed to make the movies relevant for over thirty years and generations after generations. Yes, we’ve had way too many DVD iterations, and it’s highly doubtful this Blu-ray set is the end all, be all, but the films look fantastic in Hi-Def (even with the additional tinkering – yes, Greedo still shoots first). Special features are what make this worth owning (some deleted scenes, new docs, STAR WARS parodies), though Lucas should know by now that fans would buy whatever he asked us to (no questions asked), if he would only toss in a remastered version of the “original theatrical versions” of the first trilogy.
