TV Review: SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE – “Libertus”

Dustin Clare in SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE - "Libertus" | ©2012 Starz

Stars: Lucy Lawless, Liam McIntyre, Manu Bennett, Peter Mensah, Viva Bianca, Craig Parker Writer: Aaron Helbing & Todd Helbing, Created by Steven S. DeKnight Director: Rick Jacobson  Network: STARZ, airs Friday nights Original Telecast: February 24, 2012 I feel that “Libertus” in the line of episodes of SPARTACUS VENGEANCE is more than likely what many fans have been waiting for. This new season has been a slow build, allowing for the audience to adjust to the new actor playing Spartacus (Liam McIntyre), and now clearly that time is over as the action in this episode stands as testament. Crixus (Manu […]Read On »

TV Review: SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE – “Empty Hands”

Viva Bianca in SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE | ©2012 Starz/

Stars: Lucy Lawless, Liam McIntyre, Manu Bennett, Peter Mensah, Viva Bianca, Craig Parker Writer: Allison Miller, Created by Steven S. DeKnight Director: Mark Beesley     Network: STARZ, airs Friday nights Original Telecast: February 17, 2012 So my biggest complaint with the new series of SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE is that the pacing hasn’t been on par with the other series. I’m honestly confused as to whether the pacing is better in “Empty Hands” or it just seems better because there’s more action (in more than one sense of the word). Again we have two stages of action in this episode. One which […]Read On »

TV Review: SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE – “The Greater Good”

Liam McIntyre and Katrina Law in SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE | ©2012 Starz

Stars: Lucy Lawless, Liam McIntyre, Manu Bennett, Peter Mensah, Viva Bianca, Craig Parker Writer: Tracy Bellomo, Created by Steven S. DeKnight Director: Brendan Mehr   Network: STARZ, airs Friday nights Original Telecast: February 10, 2012 The last two episodes of SPARTACUS: VENGEANCE have moved kind of slowly. Yes, there has been plenty of violence and sex, but without a main storyline of action to move them; it just becomes an explicitly painted canvas to look at. Now with “The Greater Good” the storyline jumps into overdrive and ends with what could easily be classified as a cliffhanger. The season gets more […]Read On »

CD Review: THE CAPE soundtrack

THE CAPE soundtrack | ©2011 La La Land Records

Between a starlost spacecraft, homegrown mad science, killer robots and the shambling undead, Bear McCreary is rapidly becoming the king of genre television scoring- particularly the non-super superhero. After his adventurous symphonic scores for Fox’s adaptation of DC’s identity-shifting HUMAN TARGET, McCreary employed the orchestra to even more innovative effect for NBC’s THE CAPE. While not based on any comic book per se, what gave this billowing avenger distinction beyond a Batman-esque shtick was his Toreador-worthy use of the titular clothing article, as handed to him by a not-so-bad circus of crime. While THE CAPE’s promising premise ultimately slipped under […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: SPARTACUS: GODS OF THE ARENA creator Steven S. DeKnight reflects on the mini-series – Part 1

Dustin Clare in SPARTACUS: GODS OF THE ARENA - "Missio" | ©2011 Starz

SPARTACUS: GODS OF THE ARENA has ended a trifle happier than one would guess from the previous season of BLOOD AND SAND. True the six episode series was bookended with death, but that doesn’t mean the story within didn’t have a bit of a happy ending. Steven S. DeKnight, series creator and executive producer,  has had a blast writing within the world of SPARTACUS and was more than happy to  re-visit favorite characters and the Ludus of Batiatus once more. ASSIGNMENT X got to chat this week with DeKnight now that the second season has ended and we picked his […]Read On »
