YEAR IN REVIEW: THE 10 BEST MOVIES OF 2021

SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME teaser poster | ©2021 Sony/Marvel

2021 was in many respects a nightmare year in real life, but it managed to deliver some really good movies. Here are my totally unscientific picks for the ten best. BELFAST. It’s a tough decision, but director/writer Kenneth Branagh’s ode to his childhood gets the edge, precisely because it could easily have been trite or average or, worst of all, boring. Instead, it’s informative and glorious and full of sorrow and joy. CYRANO. Directed by Joe Wright and adapted by Erica Schmidt from her stage musical (lyrics by Matt Berninger & Carin Besser, music by Aaron Dessner & Bryce Dessner), […]Read On »

Movie Review: BELFAST

BELFAST movie poster | ©2021 Focus Features

Rating: PG-13 Stars: Caitriona Balfe, Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan, Ciarán Hinds, Jude Hill, Lewis McAskie Writer: Kenneth Branagh Director: Kenneth Branagh Distributor: Focus Features Release Date: November 12, 2021 Belfast has, tragically, been synonymous with violence in Northern Ireland for much of the twentieth century. BELFAST the movie incorporates that, but it’s also the story of a boy, his family and their home. Director/writer Kenneth Branagh has based BELFAST on his own childhood. He achieves an appealing balance of nostalgia and verisimilitude in his depiction of a family, a neighborhood, and an era. BELFAST opens with a color panorama of […]Read On »

CD Review: JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT soundtrack

JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT soundtrack | ©2014 Varese Sarabande Records

It’s ironic that January will see La La Land’s full re-release of DEAD AGAIN, an operatically orchestral, knowingly old-school Hollywood score (complete with thundering chorus) for a film that put composer Patrick Doyle and actor-filmmaker Kenneth Branagh on the Hollywood map. For like this movie whose MacGuffin was a reincarnation role-reversal between composer and lover, those fans familiar with Doyle back in his symphonic glory days of CARLITO’S WAY, THE LITTLE PRINCESS and INDOCHINE  would never recognize the electronically slicing, percussively smashing composer he’s become today, especially with JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT. Make no mistake that those thematic, orchestral chops […]Read On »

In THE BRIDGE, now in its first season on FX Wednesday nights at 10 PM,Juarez,Mexico police detective Marco Ruiz (Demian Bechir) and El Paso,Texas police detective Sonya Cross (Diane Kruger) wind up working together on a homicide case that spans both their jurisdictions. Matthew Lillard’s character, reporter Daniel Frye, is often more a hindrance than a help, partly because he’s unethical and partly because he starts out as an alcoholic drug user, though as of last week’s episode, he’s trying to clean up his act. California native Lillard has been in a wide variety of fare, mostly in feature films […]Read On »
