Release Date: May 23, 2013 Back in 2009, THE HANGOVER – a comedy about a Vegas bachelor party gone astoundingly wrong – was a surprise hit. This means that Di Loreto, working with Murphy, had four shows on the air this past season: GLEE, just renewed for two more seasons, currently in its fourth season on Fox Thursday nights at 8, the second season of the reality series THE GLEE PROJECT on Oxygen, the second season of the already-renewed AMERICAN HORROR STORY on FX (all of these with Brad Falchuk as fellow executive producer) and the freshman half-hour comedy THE NEW NORMAL on NBC. In NBC’s THE NEW NORMAL, created by Ali Adler and Ryan Murphy, Midwesterner Goldie Clemmons, played by Georgia King, takes her young daughter Shania (Bebe Wood) and strikes out for California in the hopes of making a better life for both of them. This so upsets Goldie’s conservative grandmother Jane (Ellen Barkin) that the older woman follows them to the West Coast, hoping to browbeat Goldie into returning to their home state. Then Goldie meets gay couple David Murray (Justin Bartha) and Bryan Collins (Andrew Rannells), who long to be parents. Goldie agrees to serve as their surrogate, carrying the […]Read On »

TV Review: THE NEW NORMAL – Season 1 – “Bryanzilla”

Andrew Rannells and Justin Bartha in THE NEW NORMAL - Season 1 - "Bryanzilla" | ©2012 NBC/Trae Patton

Stars: Justin Bartha, Andrew Rannells, Georgia King, Bebe Wood, NeNe Leakes, Ellen Barkin Writer: Mark Kunerth   Director: Ryan Murphy       Network: NBC, airs Tuesday nights Original Telecast: October 9, 2012 Ryan Murphy is once again at the helm of this new episode of THE NEW NORMAL, and with “Bryanzilla” we have a return to the rigid stereotypes and beating over the head of messages that the series started out as. The idea for the episode is cute but absurd with Shania (Bebe Wood) getting pretend engaged and wanting to have a pretend wedding. Enter Bryan (Andrew Rannells) with clearly plenty of […]Read On »

TV Review: THE NEW NORMAL – Season 1 – “Obama Mama”

Georgia King and Bebe Wood in THE NEW NORMAL - Season 1 - "Obama Mama" | ©2012 NBC/Justin Lubin

Stars: Justin Bartha, Andrew Rannells, Georgia King, Bebe Wood, NeNe Leakes, Ellen Barkin Writer: Allison Adler  Director: Scott Ellis      Network: NBC, airs Tuesday nights Original Telecast: September 25, 2012 It’s interesting to me that the first episode of THE NEW NORMAL, “Obama Mama”, that Ryan Murphy didn’t write and direct is the first episode to really move away from the God awful stereotypes that have been plaguing this show since the pilot. I like the show, but it’s been a big bone of contention for me that every single episode is chock full of cliché stereotypes all across the board, […]Read On »

TV Review: THE NEW NORMAL – Season 1 – “Sofa’s Choice”

Georgia King, NeNe Leakes, Andrew Rannells, Justin Bartha, Bebe Wood, Ellen Barkin in THE NEW NORMAL - Season 1 | ©2012 NBC/Timothy White

Stars: Justin Bartha, Andrew Rannells, Georgia King, Bebe Wood, NeNe Leakes, Ellen Barkin Writer:  Ryan Murphy & Allison Adler  Director: Ryan Murphy      Network: NBC, airs Tuesday nights Original Telecast: September 11, 2012 I do like THE NEW NORMAL in spite of myself. I can’t help it. The one-liners are fast and funny, and even though this series does nothing but perpetuate stereotypes to middle America, I still find a lot of it funny — and I hate sitcoms. In my last review I bitched long and loud about the various forms of stereotypes that this show reinforces, and with the […]Read On »
