Toronto International Film Festival Wrap Up: Part 2 – The Warm

Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl in RUSH | ©2013 Imagine Entertainment

It’s time to re-evaluate what happened at the Toronto International Film Festival by dividing up the films into three categories. So here are the winners, losers and something in-between so just for fun I’ve broken them down into buzz terms, HOT, WARM and COLD. Part 2: THE WARM (BUZZ+CRITICAL REACTION+AUDIENCE COMMENTS) THE FIFTH ESTATE Warts and all Julian Assange / WikiLeaks story starring Benedict Cumberbatch. CONSENSUS: While it’s nice to see Bill Condon (GODS AND MONSTERS) not directing another TWILIGHT movie this was a mixed bag. Most applauded that he asked more question than he answered and praised Cumberbatch’s layered […]Read On »

TV Review: LUTHER – Series 3 – “Episodes 1-4”

Idris Elba in LUTHER - Series 3 | ©2013 BBC

Stars: Idris Elba, Sienna Guillory, Warren Brown, David O’Hara, Ruth Wilson, Dermot Crowley, Nikki Amuka-Bird Writer: Neil Cross Director: Sam Miller Network: BBC America, Tuesday-Friday 10 PM Airdates: September 3-6, 2013 Reportedly, Season 3 of LUTHER is its last. This is a crying shame, since Idris Elba inhabits London police detective John Luther with the kind of intensity that makes the world disappear while we’re watching. Most American shows about police who are this tortured wind up looking a little silly, but here, largely because of Elba’s perfect performance and also because we know how profoundly Luther has transgressed, it […]Read On »

Movie Review: PROMETHEUS

PROMETHEUS movie poster | ©2012 20th Century Fox

Rating: R Stars: Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce, Logan Marshall-Green, Sean Harris, Rafe Spall Writers: Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof Director: Ridley Scott Distributor: Twentieth Century Fox Release Date: June 8, 2012 Prior to PROMETHEUS, director Ridley Scott has, in his prolific career, made only two other science fiction films. However, those two films were ALIEN and BLADE RUNNER. It’s hard to imagine what current science fiction (and, in the case of ALIEN, creature horror) films would look like without those two seminal features in the canon, except to say that things would be different. Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures held the World Premiere of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER at the El Capitan Theater on July 19th. The carpet was red and white, and at the end of the carpet before the stars of the film and guests walked into the theater was the CAPTAIN AMERICA shield. The premiere was sponsored by Harley-Davidson, and where I was they had a white Harley that the stars autographed when they walked on the carpet.  In the film, CAPTAIN AMERICA rides a Harley-Davidson WLA motorcycle.  Also sponsoring was Baskin-Robbins and Dunkin’ Donuts. CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER […]Read On »

Interview: THOR composer Patrick Doyle wields the mighty musical hammer

Thor soundtrack © 2011 Buena Vista Records

Save those puny electronic action scores for mere mortals. For if there’s one composer who’s brought down the symphonic thunder of the composing gods, then his name would be inscribed as Patrick Doyle. Receiving his musical and acting education in his native Scotland, Doyle’s dual artistic threats would strike up a winning collaboration with Kenneth Branagh, whom Doyle beat for an actual billing when both starred in CHARIOTS OF FIRE. Branagh would scantly toil in the background for long, as his theatrical flair allowed him to take a 9 million dollar gamble behind, and in front of the camera with […]Read On »

THOR - Sif teaser poster | ©2011 Marvel/Paramount

THOR has wowed fans and casual moviegoers alike with its ability to weave the high-falutin’ Asgardian mythos into the otherwise Earthbound and technology-driven Marvel movie saga. Of course we’ll be seeing the Thunder God swinging Mjolnir with a variety of costumed cohorts and once more dealing with the dastardly doings of Loki when THE AVENGERS arrives in theaters next year.
