That isn’t to say that Spanish horror scores from that period were any less terrifying, or funky, as Spain-based Quartet Records is proving with such releases as Waldo de los Rios’ ISLAND OF THE DAMNED and Fernando Garcia Morcillo’s HOWLING OF THE DEVIL. But perhaps none of their soundtracks has a more unique origin than Giluliano Sorgini’s THE LIVING DEAD AT THE MANCHESTER MORGUE.
One of the most notorious slasher films of the 1980s was the William Lustig directed MANIAC – an unapologetic gore fest starring (and co-written by) Joe Spinell and featuring graphic gore effects by FX maestro Tom Savini.

For decades, many cited HALLOWEEN as being the first true slasher film, igniting a subgenre that continues strong to this day, but it was this curious little exploitation film that set the bar for all slasher films to come.
It’s the holiday’s again, so now, is as good as time as any to revisit why BLACK CHRISTMAS, is hands down the best Christmas-themed horror movie (sorry SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT).

Is it the winter season or the extra special Christmas bonus to Season Three? That’s the question surrounding the last three episodes of LEVERAGE, which begin airing this Sunday night (December 12) on TNT. If THE X-FILES had decided to do a Christmas episode for the R.L. Stine set, it might have been something like RARE EXPORTS: A CHRISTMAS TALE. Made and set in Finland, general vicinity where the mythical Santa supposedly dwells, RARE is a horror movie pitched at kids, with bits of gore (dead animals, a bitten ear) but mostly a sense of menace and black comedy.
In the movie ON A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT, a bunch of Halloween revelers get a very nasty tricks played to their quickly decimating numbers in this aptly titled horror film, which features an appropriately creepy score by Albanian composer Aldo Shllaku. Though he might not have a 100-piece orchestra at his command, Shllaku has obvious fun with the musical tropes of a black-humored body count. Poor Shawn Cooper (Ryan Kwanten). He and his pregnant wife Alice (Claire van der Boom) arrive at the tiny Outback town of Red Hill, where Shawn has been transferred, per his request, to be a new deputy. Shawn walks into town from his new house to meet his fellow deputies – a mixed lot – and their boss, known as Old Bill (Steve Bisley), a cantankerous but effective lawman who seems to have seen it all. Then the radio reports that convicted murderer Jimmy Conway (Tommy Lewis) has escaped from prison. Tommy was a local man and Old Bill put him away. Now it looks like the extremely dangerous escapee is heading into Red Hill for revenge. Shawn winds up in situations he never imagined as things get more and more perilous.
