This year marks the twentieth anniversary of Joss Whedon’s groundbreaking, cult-adored, academically-studied TV series BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. The series, which ran for five years on The WB and another two on UPN (both of which have since merged into The CW) starred Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, an initially reluctant Slayer who was destined to kill monsters and prevent the end of the world (a lot) in the town of Sunnydale, California. Camden Toy played three of Buffy’s most iconic nemeses, and then went over to the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER spinoff ANGEL to play yet another monster. […]Read On »

Saru, a member of an alien species not seen before in the STAR TREK universe. Rating: PG-13 Stars: Annalise Basso, Elizabeth Reaser, Lulu Wilson, Henry Thomas, Doug Jones Writers: Mike Flanagan & Jeff Howard, based on characters created by Juliet Snowden & Stiles White Director: Mike Flanagan Distributor: Universal Release Date: October 20, 2016 OUIJA: THE ORIGIN OF EVIL is a sequel, or rather a prequel, far superior to its 2014 predecessor. For starters, it makes much more sense and has many more organic scares. Those who pay attention to character names will realize what story we’re watching. Otherwise, apart from the Ouija board of the title, we have to wait for a brief post-credits […]Read On »

THE STRAIN creator Guillermo del Toro on his new nasty vamp series

FX’s new series THE STRAIN, Sundays at 10 PM, brings horror back to the vampire mythology. Forget the charmers of TRUE BLOOD, BEING HUMAN, et al, or even Bela Lugosi – these things are hideous, terrifying and breeding like Ebola virus. Worse, they’re in New York City. Center for Disease Control researchers Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll) and Nora Martinez (Mia Maestro) want to combat the plague, but so far aren’t sure how to do so; pawn shop owner Abraham Setrakian (David Bradley), who’s had experience with the creatures before, and city exterminator Vasily Fet (Kevin Durand) may have some ideas. In ABC’s freshman comedy series THE NEIGHBORS, Wednesdays at 8:30 PM, the Weaver family, headed up by mom Debbie (Jami Gertz) and dad Marty (Lenny Venito), move to an idyllic-looking suburban development – that turns out to be entirely populated by aliens stuck on this planet after they’ve lost their ability to return to home planet Zabvron. The aliens take their names from human sports celebrities, so the Weavers’ next-door neighbors – and tentative new friends – are dubbed Larry Bird (Simon Templeman) and Jackie Joyner-Kersee (Toks Olagundouye). The results are multiculturalism at a wider range than mere terrestrial folks […]Read On »
