Michael Mosley in CASTLE - Season 5 - "Probably Cause" | ©2012 ABC/Richard Cartwright

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, Susan Sullivan, Molly Quinn, Tamala Jones, Seamus Deaver, Jon Huertas, Penny Johnson Jerald Writer: Andrew W. Marlowe Director: John Terlesky Network: ABC, Monday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: October 29, 2012 After watching last week’s tease, I was seriously afraid I was going to have to slap the CASTLE producers for “Probable Cause,” this week’s episode. After how many years of jerking us around with the relationship between Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Det. Kate Beckett, I was so sure that when Castle got arrested for murder, they were going to have Beckett and him breaking up or something. Nope! […]Read On »

There were some decent aspects to REVOLUTION this week but as with most of the episodes so far this season, “Sex and Drugs” also had some pointless and fairly stupid aspects as well. After the last episode with Nora (Daniella Alonso) getting shanked by her own […]Read On »

CD Review: LAWLESS soundtrack

LAWLESS soundtrack | ©2012 Sony Classical

The team of director John Hillcoat and composer-screenwriter Nick Cave have resonated with a raw, innovative energy that’s made such pictures as THE PROPOSITION and THE ROAD anything but the same old outlaw story. The duo’s in-your-face creativity now pays off with triple-proof results for their violently entertaining moonshiner flick LAWLESS. Sure they could have gone for tunes that would have sounded just like the prohibition period. But it’s a contemporary energy that suffuses this song album. Getting off to a bang with the r & b cover of “Fire and Brimstone” by Mark Lanegan, LAWLESS‘ first impresses with a […]Read On »

CD Review: TALES OF AN ANCIENT EMPIRE soundtrack

TALES OF AN ANCIENT EMPIRE soundtrack | ©2012 Howlin Wolf

Albert Pyun arguably never had it better than when he made his visually splashy directorial debut thirty years ago with THE SWORD AND THE SORCERER, a film that energetically personified the wackier excesses of that titular 80′s genre. One element that made SWORD‘s” low budget a virtue was a powerful score by David Whitaker (available on Buysoundtrax), whose rousing music impressed, even when the playing of it didn’t. Flash-forward now to the SORCERER‘s sorta follow-up TALES OF AN ANCIENT EMPIRE, which takes on said kingdom with even far fewer shekels. But at the least, let it not be said that […]Read On »

TV Review: REVENGE – Season 2 – “Forgiveness”

Jennifer Jason Leigh in REVENGE - Season 2 - "Forgiveness" | ©2012 ABC/Eric McCandless

Stars: Emily VanCamp, Madeleine Stowe, Henry Czerny, Josh Bowman, Nick Wechsler, Gabriel Mann, Ashley Madekwe, Christa B. Allen, Connor Paolo Writer: Sunil Nayar Director: Matt Earl Beesley Network: ABC, Wednesday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: October 28, 2013 If there is a scene in “Forgiveness” that lasts longer than two minutes, I would be surprised. REVENGE has always had a problem with too much going on at a time, but it’s going more than a little bit nuts here. Add that to a sound problem that made the dialogue hard to hear in a few crucial instances, and it was rough going. Because the real Emily Thorne is actually pretending to be […]Read On »

You can even see it in the music scores – the vamp is a section that can be played for an extended time, in case something sticks, or shortened quickly if things are […]Read On »
