FRIGHT NIGHT (2011) movie poster | ©2011 Sony Pictures

Stars: Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, David Tennant, Toni Collette, Imogen Poots, Christopher Mintz-Plasse    Writer: Screenplay by Marti Noxon Based on the story and film FRIGHT NIGHT by Tom Holland Director: Craig Gillespie Distributor: Touchstone Pictures & Dreamworks Pictures Release Date: August 19, 2011 I was too young to see the original FRIGHT NIGHT in theatres when it was released. I saw it like a lot of children of the 80’s, on VHS. I liked the original flick and thought it was fun and I had always loved Roddy McDowell, but I didn’t have any kind of deep attachment to […]Read On »

CD Review: SHOOT TO KILL soundtrack (2,000 limited edition)

SHOOT TO KILL soundtrack | ©2011 Intrada Records

Between hearing the classically adventurous vine swinging of Tarzan in GREYSTOKE, vengefully playing Scott Glenn delivering a whole lot of whoop ass in the original MAN ON FIRE, capturing the fury when KING KONG LIVES or hearing the jazzy football ennui of NORTH DALLAS FORTY, the genteel John Scott has proven he certainly knows a thing or two about how to play macho attitudes and the great outdoors, Both factors would figure prominently in one of his most acclaimed Hollywood scores for 1988’s SHOOT TO KILL. Street-smart FBI agent Sidney Potier was the greenhorn when teamed with grizzled outdoorsman Tom […]Read On »

Dominic West in THE HOUR - Season 1 | ©2011 Kudos Film & Television Ltd

Stars: Ben Whishaw, Romola Garai, Dominic West, Anna Chancellor Writer: Abi Morgan Director: Coky Giedroyc Network: BBC America, Wednesdays @ 10 PM Airdate (U.S.): August 17, 2011 Before the days of TV cable, American audiences got fare made by the BBC on PBS on MASTERPIECE THEATRE and MYSTERY! The shows that turned up on both of these programs were often wonderful, full of memorable characters and fascinating stories and gorgeous period detail. THE HOUR, a six-part series that debuted on BBC America (it just concluded its run in the U.K. on BBC) would fit beautifully on either showcase. Set in […]Read On »

TV Review: WAREHOUSE 13 – Season 3 – “Don’t Hate the Player”

Joanne Kelly in WAREHOUSE 13 - Season 3 - "Don't Hate the Player" | ©2011 NBC/Steve Wilkie

Stars: Eddie McClintock, Joanne Kelly, Saul Rubinek, Genelle Williams, Allison Scagliotti, Aaron Ashmore, Jaime Murray, Ashley Williams Writer: Ian Stokes Director: Chris Fisher Network: Syfy, Mondays @ 9 PM Airdate: August 15, 2011 Well, from last weeks’ more serious WAREHOUSE 13 that spanned centuries with one artifact, we move to a somewhat sillier episode this week, “Don’t Hate the Player.” The basic premise is one we’ve seen before on most science-fiction series’, sooner or later, the video game that is some form of immersive virtual reality that is so real it kills. This version for WAREHOUSE is a somewhat lighter […]Read On »

Judge Piers Morgan couldn’t be smugger tonight on AMERICA’S GOT TALENT. Three out of the four acts picked to move on to the AGT semi-finals were his Wild Card picks. Only one was Sharon Osbourne’s and that leaves none for Howie Mandel. Morgan gained massive bragging rights while four more acts won the chance to compete next week for the title of AMERICA’S GOT TALENT season six champ. First to make it to the semi finals was West Springfield Dance Team which took out Shevonne and Yellow Designs Stunt Team. Les Miserable performed for the audience while we waited for […]Read On »

CD Review: WINNIE THE POOH soundtrack

WINNIE THE POOH soundtrack | ©2011 Walt Disney Records

The charm’s the thing as Disney makes a welcome return to the animated innocence of A.A. Milne’s Hundred Acre Wood with WINNIE THE POOH. Just because something’s as cute as a well-worn plush animal doesn’t mean that some new musical fluffies can’t be put into this tubby little cubby, especially when you’ve got Gen X darling Zooey Deschanel giving an enchanted new spin to The Sherman Brothers’ beloved theme song. The magic that the legendary Disney duo put into the tunes of Pooh (along with the likes of MARY POPPINS and THE JUNGLE BOOK) is wonderfully present in the house […]Read On »

CD Review: THE SENDER soundtrack (1,500 limited edition)

THE SENDER soundtrack | ©2011 La La Land Records

Ever since his mystical synthesizers conjured the fog that King Uther rode on to begat Arthur in EXCALIBUR, composer Trevor Jones has had a distinctive charm of making for walls of hypnotic sound, their haunting, yet gently rolling sustains and siren voices for such scores as DARK CITY, ANGEL HEART and HIDEAWAY leading to some dark epiphany on the other side of reality. In the case of 1982’s THE SENDER, Jones’ ghostly melodic washes are the eerie visions that a young mental patient projects onto those unfortunate enough to be in his range. While there are any number of jarring […]Read On »

TV Review and Recap: AMERICA’S GOT TALENT – Season 6 – “Wild Card Round”

Twelve acts saved by the three judges Piers Morgan, Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel on AMERICA’S GOT TALENT get a second shot at the semi-finals this week. Each judge brought back three acts  they felt deserved another chance to woo audiences. Ultimately, four of them will join the others in the semi finals. Although, it’s not clear if Mandel just brought back the acts that most irritated Morgan (Those Funny Little People in particular) or not, certainly the judges have differing opinions about who should get a do over and who should have never been invited back. Still, all seemed […]Read On »

TV Review: ALPHAS – Season 1 – “Bill and Gary’s Excellent Adventure”

Azita Ghanizada in ALPHAS - Season 1 - "Bill and Gary's Excellent Adventure" | ©2011 NBC/Russ Martin

Stars: David Strathairn, Ryan Cartwright, Warren Christie, Azita Ghanizada, Laura Mennell, Malik Yoba, Alaina Huffman, Peter Wingfield, Melissa Hood Writer: Adam Levy, series created by Zak Penn & Michael Karnow Director: Leslie Bibman Network: Syfy, Mondays @ 10 PM Airdate: August 15, 2011 It’s good for most shows to break from their internal formulas once in awhile, and on ALPHAS, an episode that involves solving an ordinary – that is, non-Alpha – crime is an agreeable change. On the upside, it’s fun and it lets us take a longer look at how the characters deal with issues besides what it […]Read On »
