CD Review: 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA soundtrack

20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA soundtrack | ©2011 Intrada Records

If Walt Disney had a house composer, few occupied more glorious rooms than Paul J. Smith, whose seminal Disney animation scoring credits included SNOW WHITE, a shared Oscar win for PINOCCHIO and co-nominations for THE THREE CABALLEROS and CINDERELLA. While these may have seemed like cartoons on the surface, the action, humor, and emotion that Smith invested in their scores made the pictures as richly palpable as any live-action movie. It was this talent that made Smith particularly invaluable when it came time for Walt’s “real” deals like THE SHAGGY DOG, THE PARENT TRAP and POLLYANA, not to mention any […]Read On »

Book Review: WHEDONISTAS! A CELEBRATION OF THE WORLDS OF JOSS WHEDON AND THE WOMEN WHO LOVE THEM

WHEDONISTAS! A CELEBRATION OF THE WORLDS OF JOSS WHEDON AND THE WOMEN WHO LOVE THEM

Editors: Lynne M. Thomas & Deborah Stanish Price: $14.95 Publisher: Mad Norwegian Press trade paperback (available in trade paperback and Kindle) It’s rare, though not as rare as it was, for a writer/director/producer to generate a fandom all his/her own. It’s inarguable that Joss Whedon resides at the pinnacle of this group. Should the title of WHEDONISTAS! A CELEBRATION OF THE WORLDS OF JOSS WHEDON AND THE WOMEN WHO LOVE THEM need explanation, it refers to female fans of the man and his released work so far: the television series BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, ANGEL, FIREFLY and DOLLHOUSE, the FIREFLY […]Read On »

TV Review: REVENGE – Season 1 – “Treachery”

Margarita Levieva and Emily VanCamp in REVENGE - Season 1 - "Treachery" | ©2011 ABC/Randy Holmes

Stars: Emily VanCamp, Madeleine Stowe, Henry Czerny, Josh Bowman, Nick Wechsler, Gabriel Mann, Ashley Madekwe, Christa B. Allen, Connor Paolo Writer: Ryan Scott Director: Bobby Roth Network: ABC, Wednesday nights, 10 p.m. Original Telecast: November 16, 2011 The “Treachery” episode of REVENGE makes you wonder if the writers haven’t written themselves into a corner, because it certainly looks like the wheels are coming off Emily’s big plot. The problem is, the show started at the end of the summer season with someone getting shot – and it sure looked like Emily was getting what she wanted and planned. So you have to figure the writers know where they’re going with the story and how […]Read On »

TV Review: SOUTH PARK – Season 15 – “The Poor Kid”

Kenny's parents get arrested for being White Trash on SOUTH PARK - Season 15 - "The Poor Kid" | ©2011 Comedy Central

Writer: Trey Parker Director: Trey Parker Network: Comedy Central, airs Wednesday nights Original Telecast: November 16, 2011 Part of being a SOUTH PARK fan is loving it one week and hating it the next. With “The Poor Kid”, the episode lands somewhere in the middle. There are a few laughs, a couple clever sight gags, but it’s clear the end of the season has worn down creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and the result is not a very satisfying episode. “The Poor Kid” focuses on Kenny and his siblings being sent to a foster home after his parents are […]Read On »

CD review: MALENKA soundtrack (limited 500 edition)

MALENKA soundtrack | ©2011 Quartet Records

Also known as FANGS OF THE LIVING DEAD, MALENKA (directed by THE BLIND DEAD trilogy’s Amando de Ossorio) casts the voluptuous Anita Ekberg as Sylvia, a fashion model who makes the mistake of visiting her vampire uncle’s castle. Of course in classic Euro-horror tradition, Sylvia also happens to be the vengeful Malenka, a centuries old executed witch out for some payback. But if it’s old-fashioned musical bats in the belfry you’re looking for, not to mention every other great horror score trope, than the glorious guignol of Carlo Savina delivers the goods. When he wasn’t conducting scores like THE GODFATHER […]Read On »

CD Review: Chris Isaak – BEYOND THE SUN

Chris Isaak - BEYOND THE SUN | ©2011 Vangaurd Records

Distributor: Vanguard Suggested Retail Price: $14.88 Whenever you hear someone digging into the past for a bunch of cover songs, it usually isn’t a good sign. Yet Chris Isaak, the smooth singer behind “Wicked Games” has decided to travel back to the songs of the 1950s that were recorded at the legendary Sun Records studio in Nashville with his new set BEYOND THE SUN. And hot damn if it doesn’t work. Isaak is a rare performer, whose silky smooth and emotive vocals have always had a bit of a retro tinge to it even with his own modern sensibilities thrown […]Read On »

The focus of the […]Read On »

DANCING WITH THE STARS Season 13 Recap: Hope goes Solo landing in 4th place

Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Hope Solo on DANCING WITH THE STARS - Season 13 - Week 9 | ©2011 ABC/Adam Taylor

Stars: Rob Kardashian, Ricki Lake, J.R. Martinez, Hope Solo Network: ABC, airs Mondays, Tuesdays Original Telecast: Nov. 15th, 2011 No one was surprised tonight when high scores deprived struggling couple Hope Solo & Maksim Chmerkovskiy were booted off DANCING WITH THE STARS during Week 9 of Season 13. The judges had let them know with their low scores that they wanted them to go next and well, Solo and Chmerkovskiy “very” vocally acknowledged that this week. Chmerkovskiy’s angry words to and about the judges a couple of weeks ago pretty much sealed their fate. Plus, let’s face it, Solo was […]Read On »

CD Review: THE SKIN I LIVE IN soundtrack

THE SKIN I LIVE IN soundtrack | ©2011 Quartet Records

Pedro Almodovar has a long history of making skewed “womens’” pictures, where sensuality and perversity are one and the same. Yet one major reason why so many of them are regarded as class instead of camp are the very serious musical contributions of fellow Spaniard Alberto Iglesias, whose intriguing, and refined melodic sensibilities for the likes of BAD EDUCATION, VOLVER and TALK TO HER create both an elegant, and psychologically penetrative elegance to fit Almodovar’s glossy imagery. Now with THE SKIN I LIVE IN (aka LA PIEL QUE HABITO), Iglesias takes Almodovar’s bent sensibility to a whole new level of […]Read On »

CD Review: Lady Antebellum – OWN THE NIGHT

Lady Antebellum - OWN THE NIGHT | ©2011 Captiol Records

Distributor: Capitol Records Suggested Retail Price: $9.99 At some point, when pop radio went bland and soulless, country artists started to adapt the hooky stylings that made them appeal to people who missed the good old days. Shania Twain perhaps paved the way with music that was country in labeling only (she was secretly a pop star, even if steel guitars were playing in the background). She even proved that theory with a two-disc set that had the songs mixed for country radio stations AND rock radio. Now, many country artists teeter on that thin line and no more blatant […]Read On »
