Comic Book Review: ANGEL #44

ANGEL Issue #44 | ©2011 IDW

Writer: David Tischman and Mariah Huehner Penciler: Elena Casagrande Cover Artist: Elena Casagrande Distributor: IDW Well Angel and most of his crew survived AFTER THE FALL, and starting with issue #18 the series was simply re-named ANGEL. That was pretty much the point I lost interest in this series. Once Joss Whedon was no longer directly involved this series because the typical bad-genre spin-off comic book that has happened a hundred times over. The stories were weak and spread out, new useless characters were brought in, then killed off, or worse off they stuck around – and then the whole […]Read On »

In the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN films, the attention (per the title) is on the pirates. However, His Majesty’s Navy is usually on the scene. Greg Ellis’ character Theodore Groves, one of the naval officers in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD’S END (he wasn’t in the second film), is now back in the latest installment, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES. The actor, who hails from Lancashire, England, talks exclusively with ASSIGNMENT X about his adventures on the cinematic high seas. ASSIGNMENT X: Have you been going […]Read On »

Interview: THOR composer Patrick Doyle wields the mighty musical hammer

Thor soundtrack © 2011 Buena Vista Records

Save those puny electronic action scores for mere mortals. For if there’s one composer who’s brought down the symphonic thunder of the composing gods, then his name would be inscribed as Patrick Doyle. Receiving his musical and acting education in his native Scotland, Doyle’s dual artistic threats would strike up a winning collaboration with Kenneth Branagh, whom Doyle beat for an actual billing when both starred in CHARIOTS OF FIRE. Branagh would scantly toil in the background for long, as his theatrical flair allowed him to take a 9 million dollar gamble behind, and in front of the camera with […]Read On »

Interview: Malcolm McDowell on the 40th Anniversary of A CLOCKWORK ORANGE

Malcolm McDowell in A CLOCKWORK ORANGE | ©1971 Warner Bros.

In 1971, director Stanley Kubrick created a whole new filmic language with his controversial adaptation of the Anthony Burgess novel A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. A slightly futuristic satire on free will, the film starred Malcolm McDowell as the ultra-violent Alex, a wayward youth who finds a thrill in empty acts of sex and violence. When he’s sentenced to prison for murder, he’s enlisted into a new government program designed to curb his anti-social tendencies, but the after effects transform Alex from villain to unlikely anti-hero. A CLOCKWORK ORANGE has remained a polarizing film for decades and the new two-disc Blu-ray edition […]Read On »

CD Review: SUPERMAN / SHAZAM! THE RETURN OF BLACK ADAM original soundtrack

SUPERMAN/SHAZAM! THE RETURN OF BLACK ADAM original soundtrack | ©2011 La La Land Records

Forget The Wonder Twins and that stupid blue monkey. DC Comics’ animation certainly isn’t kids’ stuff anymore, especially given the musical sophistication that’s put into this direct-to-video DC Showcase edition (half of whose four chapters would gleefully get a reject stamp by The Comics Code Authority). Tying the disparate sounds of its stories together are Jeremy Zuckerman and Benjamin Wynn, whose musical wonder powers ignite under the emblem of Track Team. Getting the muscle of a real orchestra through samples, and above all good writing, Zuckerman and Wynn bring superhero majesty, and mythic enchantment to the Showcase’s best entry that […]Read On »

Movie Review: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES final poster | ©2011 Walt Disney Studios

Rating: PG-13 Stars: Johnny Depp, Peneolpe Cruz, Geoffrey Rush, Ian McShane Writer: Screenplay by Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio, Characters by Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio, Stuart Beattie,Jay Wolpert Director: Rob Marshall Distributor: Walt Disney Pictures Release Date: May 20, 2011 PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN is a film series that I think could probably just keep going like the Energizer Bunny. People didn’t react as kind to the last couple of PIRATES sequels as well as they did the first film though. Complaints concerning films two and three (DEAD MAN’S CHEST and AT WORLD’S END)were that there were too many storylines […]Read On »

Movie Review: PRIEST

PRIEST movie poster | ©2011 Screen Gems

Rating: PG-13 Stars: Paul Bettany, Karl Urban, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q, Lily Collins, Christopher Plummer, Stephen Moyer Writer: Cory Goodman, based on the graphic novel series by Min-Woo Hyung Director: Scott Stewart Distributor: Screen Gems Release Date: May 13, 2011 PRIEST is a decent enough post-apocalyptic action movie, pitting a kinetic superhero against an army of darkness, but the film’s reliance on archetypes is at odds with what seem to be its intended philosophical underpinnings. By the end, we can’t tell if director Scott Stewart and screenwriter Cory Goodman have intentionally managed to avoid being overly pretentious in adapting Min-Woo […]Read On »
