It’s hard to believe that THE GOONIES is celebrating its 25th Anniversary (it has a brand-new Blu-ray set to prove it), so it was about  time ASSIGNMENT X caught up with actor Corey Feldman to talk about his memories playing the opinionated Mouth in that now classic 1985 film.

The story was a pint-sized version of the INDIANA JONES saga (albeit with more juvenile humor), as a group of kids find a treasure map and go on an adventure in the bowels of their own home town.

Feldman has fond memories of the experience and we got him to Take Five with us.

TAKE 1:
Do you remember when you first auditioned for the role?

“The first time I ever met Corey Haim was ironically in the waiting room at Amblin, because he was also auditioning for the part of Mouth,” recalls Feldman. “I didn’t know it at the time, but he reminded me several times throughout our career, that the first time we ever met was when he was sitting there for his chance to audition. I don’t think I even paid attention to him. I was just focused on going in and auditioning. He obviously remembered, because I got the part.”

TAKE 2:
Was it as crazy as it looks on screen having all the young performers talking over each other?
“The first cut of the film was eight hours long and that’s not a joke, you can ask [director] Dick [Donner],” says Feldman. “That’s because they didn’t know where to cut. We were in the looping stage for six weeks. We had our school trailers camped out in the parking lot of the ADR building. I think it probably was historically, the longest ADR sessions ever, because you had seven kids who were constantly improvising and constantly talking over each other yelling and screaming.”

TAKE 3:
Other than the octopus scene, were there any other significant things cut from the film that you remember?
“The Leech scene – it got cut,” he says. “Some of us don’t even remember it. It was in the wishing well scene. They had to put that fake skin stuff on us. They came and showed [the leeches] to us and they were very nervous about insurance and all that kind of stuff, but they said ‘Oh, don’t worry, it’s fake skin we put it on you first.’ They did real life leaches on us, which was a contrast, because I did the same thing on STAND BY ME a year later, but they were fake leaches. Only [Steven] Spielberg and Donner were daring enough to put real life leeches on kids.”

TAKE 4:
What is one of your most vivid memories of working on the movie?
“I remember the blue boogers,” says Feldman with a laugh. “The water they used was a giant pool. It was almost a lake on the set. They kept it heated for us, and all the guys in the camera crew had to wear wet suits, because they were in the water all day long. But there was so much dye in the water to make it royal blue and give it its vibrant color, at the end of the day, you would blow your nose and you would have all this blue stuff coming out of your nose. It wasn’t just being in the water, it was being in the room and this food coloring was on the gold coins and everywhere.”

TAKE 5:
How has this movie affected your own life?
“Martha Plimpton said she will be doing Shakespeare in the park and somebody will shout out GOONIES or I will be doing a concert with my band Truth Movement and people will yell out ‘Goonies Never Say Die.’ It’s one of those things that hangs with you through life.”
