Movie Review: PAUL

Stars: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Seth Rogen, Jason Bateman, Sigourney Weaver, Bill Hader, Kristen Wigg Writers: Simon Pegg & Nick Frost Director: Greg Mottola Distributor: Universal Release Date: March 17, 2010 It’s rare a comedy comes around that’s as delightfully original and laugh-out loud funny as PAUL. Written by Nick Frost and Simon Pegg (who have previously teamed up as actors in SHAUN OF THE DEAD and HOT FUZZ), it’s a very meta-take on what would happen if two geeky nubs came across an actual alien while traveling cross-country in America. In this case, those nubs are English – Graeme […]Read On »

Super Bowl Commercial Review: SUPER 8 trailer (and watch it too!)

SUPER 8 poster | ©2011 Paramount Pictures/Amblin

With Super Bowl Sunday here, ASSIGNMENT X has decided to review the movie trailer commercials in between the game to see how well the studios are using their mega-dollars they’re spending to draw people into theaters. SUPER 8 Release Date: June 10 Stars: Unsure, at least from the trailer What Is it? A science-fiction film about something powerful out there going after people – and a kid at the center of it. Is that vague enough? Want To See Factor: For a trailer that tells you nothing about what it is, this thing looks AWESOME. It’s the first look of […]Read On »

CD Review: POLTERGEIST Special Edition (10,000 Edition) soundtrack

Poltergeist (c) 2010 Film Score Monthly

Certainly one of the loudest, and most exciting horror scores belongs inside the television set of the Freeling family, as installed by Jerry Goldsmith. Though a master of just about every movie genre, horror had provided a creatively malefic voice for Goldsmith. He’d marry Bartok-esque impressionism and old scratch violins for THE MEPHISTO WALTZ, blow on MAGIC’s unbalanced harmonicas and win his only Oscar for chanting THE OMEN’s black mass.

There’s been a lot written about the new ambitious Fox science-fiction series TERRA NOVA (which will air a two-hour premiere on May 23 and follow with the full series in the fall), but for the first time, the executive producers and cast were able to get together and chat in more detail. At today’s Winter TCA session for Fox, executive producer Brannon Braga says the reason for the two-hour premiere was due to “too much story.” “We struggled for a long time how to fit it all in into 60 pages,” says Braga. “There was a meeting with the network […]Read On »

With so many hours of excellent television (THE TWILIGHT ZONE) and classic films under his belt (SUPERMAN, THE OMEN, the LETHAL WEAPON franchise), the problem with speaking to director Richard Donner is figuring out where to actually start. Luckily, that part was taken care of for us since he recently did some press in honor of the 25th Anniversary of his classic adventure/kids film THE GOONIES which just hit Blu-ray in a brand-new deluxe edition. Executive produced by Steven Spielberg and written by Chris Columbus, THE GOONIES is one of those perfect 1980s confections filled with great performances by a […]Read On »
