After all, once he and/or we start asking the questions that finally occur to Ryan about dog-who-appears-as-man-in-a-dog-suit Wilfred (Jason Gann) – “Who are you? What are […]Read On »

Stars: Elijah Wood, Jason Gann, Fiona Gubelmann, Dorian Brown, Chris Klein, Gabriella Pession Writers: Sivert Glarum & Michael Jamin, series created by Jason Gann & Adam Zwar, adapted for American television by David Zuckerman Director: Randall Einhorn Network: FX, Thursdays @ 10 PM Airdate: September 1, 2011 In WILFRED, a lot of things are in flux a lot of the time, including everyone’s motives and emotions. That’s probably to be expected when the show is about a young man who sees his neighbor’s dog as an Australian fellow in a dog suit. It’s easy to accept that Wilfred (Jason Gann), […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: It’s a dog’s life for WILFRED star Jason Gann

To employ a cliché, Jason Gann is a lot better-looking in person than he is on television. To be fair, this may have something to do that when he’s on television, he’s playing the title character in FX’s Thursday 10 PM comedy WILFRED, so he’s dressed in a fuzzy black-and-white dog suit with floppy ears and a painted-on black nose. This is because Wilfred is a dog, although to his owner’s neighbor, Wilfred looks and talks like an Australian bloke in a dog suit. Not that this is one of Hollywood’s more time-consuming transformations, Gann notes with a laugh. “It’s […]Read On »

Dwight Yoakam in WILFRED - Season 1 - "Doubt" | ©2011 FX/Ray Mickshaw

Stars: Elijah Wood, Jason Gann, Fiona Gubelmann, Dorian Brown, Dwight Yoakam Writers: Reed Agnew & Eli Jorne, series created by Jason Gann & Adam Zwar, adapted for American television by David Zuckerman Director: Randall Einhorn. Network: FX, Thursdays @ 10 PM Airdate: August 25, 2011 WILFRED viewers may have questions along the lines of, “What the hell is really going on here?” For awhile, “Doubt” seems like it’s going to answer some of these, but it turns out, like so many other things about Wilfred the character (Jason Gann), to be simply a gotcha. However, as it’s a smart, funny […]Read On »

Stars: Elijah Wood, Jason Gann, Fiona Gubelmann, George Coe, Eric Stoltz, Peter Stormare, Kelli Williams Writers: Steve Baldikoski & Bryan Behar, series created by Jason Gann & Adam Zwar, adapted for American television by David Zuckerman Director: Victor Nelli, Jr. Network: FX, Thursdays @ 10 PM Airdate: August 18, 2011 Judging by the list of name actors in “Isolation” – George Coe, Eric Stoltz, Peter Stormare and Kelli Williams – let alone the whole series so far, WILFRED is clearly a popular destination for guest-starring gigs. Coincidentally, popularity, and the lack of it, is the topic of “Isolation,” which breezily […]Read On »

Stars: Elijah Wood, Jason Gann, Fiona Gubelmann, Mary Steenburgen, John Michael Higgins, Rhea Perlman Writer: Patricia Breen, series created by Jason Gann & Adam Zwar, adapted for American television by David Zuckerman Director: Victor Nelli, Jr. Network: FX, Thursdays @ 10 PM Airdate: August 18, 2011 We’ve known for awhile that Ryan (Elijah Wood), the human protagonist in WILFRED, suffers from all kinds of repression and self-doubt. The episode “Compassion” gets into the back story for Ryan’s personality when we meet his free-spirited mother Catherine (Mary Steenburgen), who has just spent twenty years in an upscale psychiatric facility. TV Review: WILFRED – Season 1 – “Anger”

Stars: Elijah Wood, Jason Gann, Dorian Brown, Nestor Carbonell Writers: Sivert Glarum & Michael Jamin, series created by Jason Gann & Adam Zwar, adapted for American television by David Zuckerman Director: Victor Nelli, Jr. Network: FX, Thursdays @ 10 PM Airdate: August 11, 2011 Given how WILFRED as a series sends up everything, almost the last thing one would expect in an episode is a note of sincere emotion, but that’s just how “Anger” ends. On its way, it deals once more with Ryan’s (Elijah Wood) awesome passivity in the face of verbal/emotional abuse, Wilfred’s (Jason Gann) diabolical behavior, some […]Read On »

TV Review: WILFRED – Season 1 – “Trust”

Stars: Elijah Wood, Jason Gann, Dorian Brown, Fiona Gubelmann Writer: David Zuckerman Director: Randall Einhorn Network: FX, Thursdays @ 10 PM Airdate: June 30, 2011 The second episode of WILFRED revolves in large part around the endless credulity of main character Ryan (Elijah Wood). While a lot of this is funny, given Ryan’s previous experience with the duplicity of the canine Wilfred (Jason Gann), it seems like our human boy should now have a sense of when his leash is being yanked. Trying to get into the good graces of Jenna (Fiona Gubelmann), Ryan promises to take Wilfred to the […]Read On »

Manoux, Gibson Bobby Sjobeck Writer: David Zuckerman Director: Randall Einhorn Network: FX, Thursdays @ 10 PM Airdate: June 23, 2011 Where everyone else sees a big, friendly, ordinary dog, Ryan (Elijah Wood) sees a man in a children’s theatre dog suit (Jason Gann). So goes the premise of FX’s new half-hour comedy WILFRED, adapted from the Australian series of the same name, created by Gann and Jason Zwar, which also starred Gann as the talkative, manipulative canine. In the opening episode, “Happiness,” Ryan makes multiple attempts at suicide, which succeed […]Read On »
